We had one of our best meals at the Boathouse so can recommend it. Are you going lunch or dinner? We were told we could not book for lunchtime but when we turned up people had booked. Saying that, we only had to wait for about 15 minutes before we were seated (one of the best tables in the restaurant as well). My advice would be to definitely give the Boathouse a go - it is an amazing setting and the food was very good. Only downside was the extremely snotty Maitre'D but once you get past him - well worth it.

Try to book if you can but if not get there about 15 minutes before they open to be sure of a table. If you are going for dinner than you will certainly need to book. I phoned them direct from the UK when I was trying to book the table.

Also, our daughter was 16 when we went and she was allowed into restaurants serving alcohol. No idea of prices though as we dont really drink.

The River Cafe at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge (Brooklyn side) is another amazing restaurant. Expensive but you are paying for the fantastic view as well as the food. After we had eaten we sat on the outside terrace (where they serve cocktails) and watched the lights coming on in Manhattan and on the Brooklyn Bridge. Our meal there came to about $400 dollars for 3 with only one alcoholic drink but it was our anniversary!

    Thanks for that Greg.
I will try the Boathouse then , thats asuming I can manage to book when I get there. We will probably go for dinner. I think I will try the River cafe too. What the hell, I probably won't be back again soon so may as well make the most of it.
We like any food really. I want to try Chinatown for a meal also.
LOL only there for 5 days, it seems I'm going to spend most of it eating;-)

My daughter is 18 do I need to follow the same advice as Mark's post below?

"your daughter won't be allowed into bars that are just a bar. A restaurant should be ok, but a bar that serves food, debatable, during the day yes, after 6pm, probably not. "

When are you going to NYC? Baseball season is over, and we're currently in post season, so tickets will be thin on the ground and very expensive.

Hmm... You get into NYC when it is baseball season (just) but there are not any schedules out yet for the 2010 season, so it's a tough call.

If Yankees ain't in town, you could go to see the (spits) Mets!!

    Hi everyone

    I hope someone can help

I'm going to new york in dec and my partner has insisted we hire a car (He is public transport-aphobic) Therefore, I'd like to book a hotel that is slightly out so we can drive into manhattan and we can also go to jersey too. It means the hotels will be slightly cheaper (I dont really want to pay £100 per night!) Does anyone have any recommendations of any nice safe areas with cheap hotels?

ooh... Driving in ny is a bit of a no-no... The traffic is like NOTHING i've ever experienced. Would it be an option to stay more 'local' to where you want to be? It might mean you paying a bit more, but then you wont have the expense of hiring a car and paying to park it (not to mention the hassle)... You could just rent a car for the one day you want to go to jersey?

sorry cant really help with hotels until you give us a budget and location your looking for .But if you think of moving to the outskirts to get a cheaper deal then hiring a car to drive into manhattan and pay huge $$ TOP DOLLAR for parking baffles me really baffles me. You will be sorry. transport even taxis are so easy to use Think central London then tripple it

My budget would be about £50-80 a night.. The location is what i'm not too sure about
although as traffic is as horrendous as it is, we may have to get public transport whilst in manhattan. I wanted to know a few areas around that area, maybe jersey, where hotels won't be that expensive.

Brooklyn and Queens sound idyllic on paper.. but some areas aren't supposed to be safe? How about Staten Island? Is that too far?

Got back Tuesday morning after a fab 4 days, great weather, great atmoshphere.. So much so I'm thinking of "popping back" in December whilst we're in Orlando, got a quote for Xmas Eve to Boxing Day flights and 2 nights at Crowne Plaza Times Sq for £1074 for 3 of us, any suggestions for an alternative hotel, so many to choose from.

P.s - The super shuttle was spot on -on time both ways no tolls just tip..
