Don't know when your going Steph but we wll be there from the 22nd if you want some company.

Back to my post. Regarding The Boathouse, is this not worth going to then? If not what other decent restaraunt could anyone recommend. Also can anyone give me an idea of drink prices? Beer, spirits, etc.
My daughter is 17 will she be allowed into places that serve alcohol, not drinking it of course.

your daughter won't be allowed into bars that are just a bar. A restaurant should be ok, but a bar that serves food, debatable, during the day yes, after 6pm, probably not.

Beers anything between $4 and $6 is a reasonable price, $6 - $8 in tourist areas, plus $1 tip.

Spirits, well, again, anything really, I've had vodka/cranberry at $1 during happy hour.. but normally this will set you back about $6 - $8 at normal places up to $10 in more expensive/tourist bars.

Soda is about $2, but then you normally get free refills.

As for restaurants, give a budget, and likes/dislikes to food so we don't recommend a steak house to a vegetarian! ;)

Just pre ordered NFT NY 2010 and Brits guide 2010 on amazon. Many thanks.

Will be staying at the Hilton Garden inn 28th street near chelsea district for 4 days in april
Read all your tips Markm which I have to say are excellent. Really informative.

anyway can I ask where is the best place to get Broadway show tickets or possible Yankee's tickets?

    Cheers.

When are you going to NYC? Baseball season is over, and we're currently in post season, so tickets will be thin on the ground and very expensive.

We were in NYC two years ago and two friends we travelled with got the passes. They raced round trying to fit as much as possible in, in the time they had and I'm sure they'd tell you, they had fun!

We didn't see anywhere near as much as they did, but I think we had a great feel for the city, had walked for miles and saw all the things we wanted, including the Guggenheim (that was a 'pay what you wish donation evening) and a couple of the tours. There are plenty of vouchers out there - American's just love their vouchers :p - and I'm not sure all the sights that are listed are particularly worth seeing!

However, thats my point of view ;) Whatever you do, have a fabulous time! Its an amazing place.

Yey, this was me and savercorin. The passes were super, we queue jumped in places like Madam Tussauds (sp?) got free things in planet hollywood shop and a little guide book with map telling us all the discounts and details.

We didn't pay a lot for ours at the time as they were on special offer.

    Aww steph poor you!
Just to add to all the reassurance from everyone else... I'm 23 (just!), and went in August with my sister... I live in Birmingham, quite a big city, but genuinely felt more comfortable in new york than I do at home!
I think as long as you be sensible (ie dont put your bag down randomly, dont wander down dark streets at night, etc), you'll be absolutely fine!

I also think that part of it is that there is SO many people around all the time, and they are all very helpful, so if you get lost or arent sure what to do or anything, there's always someone around who'll ask if you need help.

It was the first time I'd travelled without my parents or anything, but I loved it, and would have no problem going alone... Its that kinda place, I think. I wouldnt have been comfortable going on holiday on my own before (And I dont know if I would go anywhere else on my own), and I know the first time will be daunting for you, but it wont be as bad as you think!

We had one of our best meals at the Boathouse so can recommend it. Are you going lunch or dinner? We were told we could not book for lunchtime but when we turned up people had booked. Saying that, we only had to wait for about 15 minutes before we were seated (one of the best tables in the restaurant as well). My advice would be to definitely give the Boathouse a go - it is an amazing setting and the food was very good. Only downside was the extremely snotty Maitre'D but once you get past him - well worth it.

Try to book if you can but if not get there about 15 minutes before they open to be sure of a table. If you are going for dinner than you will certainly need to book. I phoned them direct from the UK when I was trying to book the table.

Also, our daughter was 16 when we went and she was allowed into restaurants serving alcohol. No idea of prices though as we dont really drink.

The River Cafe at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge (Brooklyn side) is another amazing restaurant. Expensive but you are paying for the fantastic view as well as the food. After we had eaten we sat on the outside terrace (where they serve cocktails) and watched the lights coming on in Manhattan and on the Brooklyn Bridge. Our meal there came to about $400 dollars for 3 with only one alcoholic drink but it was our anniversary!
