Going there for a couple of nights, anyone know a good place to stay? Nothing too expensive and near Broadway if possible.

There are over 400 hotels in NYC, and probably around 300 of them near Broadway. I stay in a hotel in Tribeca, which is on West Broadway, and that's only 2 blocks away from Broadway.

What you're failing to do, to get any help from anyone, is to really define where you want to stay. Broadway runs from the southern tip of Manhattan up to 168th Street in Washington Heights.

Give us some dates, budget, and the AREA you want to stay in (yes, I know I could guess and assume you want Times Square/Theater District), but I like a hotel which is close to Broadway / City Hall....

Also, unless you're going to shows every night, don't limit yourself to an area, as you can get to most places in 20 minutes or less by using the subway
  • We tried to get a bus to the subway station yesterday with all our luggage, and encountered the grumpiest driver ever.

Our seven day subway card had run out by that point as well and no one had told us about the coins only rule on buses - but we were saved by a local behind us in the queue who immediately offered to pay for us on his pay-as-you-go in exchange for cash.

That's something I forgot to mention actually - how kind and tourist-friendly most New Yorkers we encountered were!
  • 2 1/2 weeks to go. I'm getting all excited now :T:j
Just trying to decide where and when to get my dollars.

Maybe i am slight boring at times, but reading the websites that offer information on public transport does give you everything you need to know, so the exact change, no dollar bills rule is clearly stated on the mta website..

not that it's any use now.... :\
  • Yeah, maybe that is slightly boring. ;) Na, only joking - just didn't think it was going to be an issue as we hadn't counted on getting a bus without our metro card. All fine though, lesson learnt for the next time - although still planning on avoiding buses where I can!

New York City Bus only runs in New York, and not New Jersey when you're at the airport. There really isn't a way, bus, train or
otherwise to avoid a tunnel getting into Manhattan from EWR, which was the first question. Why I miss bus from an option when in Manhattan, well for $2.25, it can take an hour to get uptown, which would be 20 minutes in a taxi, or 10 minutes on a subway, so however amazing they are, IMO they are NOT an option for uptown / downtown travel. However, they are useful for Cross town travel, where your only current options are the S/7 subway, and the L... the E somewhat, but only if you start at 8th avenue, and want to be Central Park South/East corner.

There is one way to get from EWR to Manhattan without taking any tunnel, and that is via Helicopter. There are currently offers with Continental, that make this only $59 til the end of this month.

You weren't just talking about travel from Newark, you were talking about getting around aswell.

Personally, I found them useful. I accept that you don't find them useful. However, I do accept that there are lots of different forms on transport and some suit some people, and some don't. I therefore don't out of hand discount anything so strongly.

You implied in your first post there was no way to get around other than subway, walking or taxi.
