I love the pictures of the work that's been done, well done everyone.

I'm mainly a knitter too but have just finished this throw in crochet.

    It needs a press lol.

Not too keen on the colours but the were from a 'How to Crochet magazine'.

There's nothing wrong with the colours Waterlily. It's lovely.
  • I usually have a couple of crochet projects on the go, I recently finished two baby cardigans I'm also making a blanket, 81 squares, 9 each of 9 different colourways, it's an easy project to take with me when I'm at work etc.
    Chin up, Titus out.
  • I am stash busting and crochet gets through yarn very fast. I need a small bedside rug so am using long stored home spun, textured yarn (uneven :) ) Just loose trebles and a rectangle. Will machine wash to shrink and felt. It is going very fast and lovely and mindless

Next project will be more stash busting, A crochet cardy from ravelry called kram, looks nice but also very easy. I like a change from knitting and also one stitch at a time.

Am using a new hook mustard colour and better for the hands, by clover. No hand ache at all
  • Wow, SallyUK, Justamum, waterlilly..they are all amazing. I'm very behind on posts. Haven't checked in here in a while, but been crocheting like mad.
I've paused on the blanket i'm working on and started making anything and everything i can for my baby. Just had my 12 week scan, so finally feel i can!! :) So far everything is white and cream..til we can find out if it's a pinky or a blue. Have never made any baby items before. Got a million patterns, but they're all so tiny and seem more fiddly than full size. Booties and hat done so far and got a jacket almost there.

  • I recently bought myself a lovely crochet pattern book in The Works, only to find that it has no 'how to crochet' instructions and my old craft books aren't much help - doh!

I've come across this Stylecraft How to Crochet instruction booklet which will hopefully help get me started, and thought I'd post a link in case anyone else found it helpful. It uses UK terms but has a handy list at the end explaining the corresponding US terminology:

  • Ravelry have lots of great patterns and a lot are free. I have a crochet blog called Hooked and I think a lot of younger people are taking up crafts that previously have seen a bit old fashioned. I love Crocheting!
  • Hi to Pinky, bizzylizzy, Bella 79, Barney's Mom et al,
I have loved looking at this forum thread, as I too am self-taught from the internet, with odd bits of advice from more experienced crocheters among my friends. I have managed to make quite a few blankets - some from granny sqares, some free-designed(!), and the latest fad I have is the "never-ending Granny Square." This is great as you don't have all the stitching up to do at the end, which has to be v. neat, and I personally found tedious. I originally intended them to go abroad with charities for the displaced, or disaster victims, but the charity shop told me they'd just sell it in their shop and send the money, which wouldn't even cover the cost of my wool let alone the work that went in!
I've been giving them as presents to family members who have been delighted, much to my surprise.
I have found that charity shops sell lots of wool cheaply, and lots of knitting needles and crochet hooks, and the other day I got a rug-making hook for 50p.
I can't remember seeing any posts recommending The Crochet Crowd tutorials on YouTube, but they are fantastic for beginers right up to expert level - they take you through every step clearly and even show left handed versions too.
  • Does anyone else crochet with PLASTIC YARN? (AKA plarn). There are great videos on YouTube about how to make it from old carrier bags, then crochet it into all kinds of things. My main use has been shopping bags - from flimsly environmental nuisance to sturdy, attractive long-lasting shopping bags. Once I'd seen it done, I HAD to have a go, and I loved it. I've even seen it made into mats for the floor, and sleeping mats for homeless people.
Recently there's been a big drive to get rid of plastic out of the environment, and although these bags are still plastic, they last for years and years and stop you having to take/buy more carrier bags from the shops.
Please look it up and have a go, I'd love to hear about people's successes with this.

P.S, Old cushion covers with strong handles added at the zip opening side also make great cheap and easy shopping bags, again they're strong and stop you getting carriers at the supermarket. And you can zip them closed.
P.P.S. colourful summer vest tops - turn inside out, pull centre front and centre back of bottom hem apart, sew 2 lines of stitching (for strength) to close this edge, turn right way out again, and you have a stretchy bag for shopping, swimming, etc. etc. Yeah - not crochet, but still crafting, huh.
  • I have signed up to a beginners crochet class and can't wait. i can sew patchwork quilts and knit aran jumpers but have always wanted to crochet, even just basic stitches. This class is for absolute beginners. Really looking forward to it
