Just the others ( virgin, sky, tiscali etc...) will follow suit - its one thing having a different call charge , but this would be a big difference

No UK phone company has ever included these call types in their packages before, because 0845 and 0870 numbers generate large revenues for the banks, utility firms and other organisations that use them.

The above (from the BT web site) isn't true - I've still got a tariff from Orange that includes 0870 and 0845 calls - looks like I can get rid of it now :)

So this would make using a dial up internet service on BT free ??

According to this list there are 149 ISP's still using 0845 for dial up

  • This is great news for BT's residential customers, but business customers calling 0845/0870 numbers are excluded from this.

03 numbers are still the best option for everyone by far as they are the same price to call as standard landlines from any operator, inclusive in all call packages and also the only number which is inclusive in mobile packages (40% of all calls are now from mobiles).

Many organisations are now choosing 03 numbers - including the BBC, Metropolitan Police, Oxfam, RSPCA and Pioneer.

The Department of Health launched a consulation last month, reviewing the use of 084 telephone numbers in the NHS, and the document (which can be downloaded from its website) suggests that 03 numbers are an ideal alternative.

If you phone 0845 numbers from your mobile, it doesn't tend to come out of your free minutes, however, i've learnt a clever way to get around this. If for example you want to call your bank, the 0845 number would cost you money. On your bank card there is a number to call from abroad, use this number instead, its a UK landline number that puts you through to the same call centre. This will usually come out of free minutes on your mobile and even some home phone packages.

Unless they are going to redirect you to a different number which will be 0845!
