  • Hello All,

I've used 123-reg.co.uk and can't fault them. I will now look into jamroll.co.uk as I'm thinking of ditching my ISP and like the idea of not being tied to their hosting.

I can also recommend an FTP program called FileZilla (http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/). I feel it is relevant to mention this as it is Open Source software, which usually means it's FREE! There is lots of good Open Source software around, like Mozilla Firefox & OpenOffice which can give expensive software a run for it's money. A good place to start is with SourceForge.net (http://sourceforge.net/) which hosts a lot of open source projects.

...... another MoneySaving idea ..... maybe worth it's own topic elsewhere (if there isn't one already)?

I'd emailed Lycos about whether I'd need to have hosting as well with their domain and they replied....

"Without a hosting package you will not be able to publish a website, due to the fact you will have no FTP user and no bandwidth."

So the 5MB that is included can't be used in this way. Maybe it is just for email. Might have to go with Jamroll. Do they place adverts on your pages?

Sorry mate they are right. I would have guessed they would let you use the 5MB for space. It seems it is just for email space.

With regards to Jamroll. They stick 3-4 google adwords at the bottom of your site. We're talking size 8 font I think. You can even change the colour of them.

Their adword system is going up and down. No one has ads at the moment.

I really wouldn't worry about them, they're unnoticeable. No banners or picture ads.

Try https://www.dot.tk or type free domain names in a google search. They will give you a free domain ending in .tk or similar. The problem is that your site

    may load slowly,
you are not offered email facilities using your new domain
and finally you can't use a lot of hosting services which require you to purchase a domain and point it at their webservers. This includes the free service jamroll.

You can however find free webspace that gives you an address, usually a very long and obscure (not like your own purchased domain name) and then get your free .tk address linked to it. This means your mates only need to type your free .tk address to get to it. Ads will not be your friend!

If you can, pay £6 for a nice and short domain for two years and get jamroll for free. £6 for two years is not a lot.
  • The cheapest place I have found you can buy a domain is 1&1.com you can buy domains here for less then £5 for 2years. Then I recommend as others have https://www.jamroll.co.uk, the site is top notch and speaks for itself! A saviour and the no1 hosting site in my eyes out there, it offers better service then the web hosting company that I currently pay money towards!!

I've found lycos web hosting the cheapest prices so far for .co.uk domains....

    http://webhosting.lycos.co.uk/consumer/domain/

The price list (above) says that they are £3.98 for two years but that is excluding VAT so the true price is £4.68

Yeah, I was just checking out the DreamHost website - they seem crazy - all that webspace and 1TB bandwidth for only $9.95 a month. Wicked.
