free webhosting with your own domain name

i've found 2 good hosts which let you use your own domain name e.g https://www.myself.com, rather than force you to use myname.webhost.com.
1. freevirtualservers.com - good but a bit slow with support. i think they give about 100mb or 50mb at least, which is quite a lot for personal or even community websites. the catch? you must have a link saying "hosted by freevirtualservers.com" or something, which is nothing compared to paying at least 3 pounds a month for hosting.
2. jamroll.co.uk - i use this because the space they give you is just unbelievable. 350mb webspace and 5gb bandwith. the catch is that your pages will have google ads on em. i dont have a problem with them because they're about 5 pixels only anyways.
i bought cheap domain names at lycos webhosting, i think its 5 pounds for 2 years. or less. another good one is at 123-reg.co.uk, which is like 2 pounds more expensive, but the service is second to none. registered me in 10 minutes compared to lycos' 40 hours or something.

It's always worth checking your ISP as well to see if they give you free web space as part of your package. This would normally do fine for simple web pages, with the bonus that you do not have to put adverts on your site.
My ISP (Zen) gives me 1GB of free web space with unlimited bandwidth as part of my package. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

watch out for the free webhosts which give you a domain too - you are usually tied into using them for hosting forever or have to pay an extortionate fee to move the domain to someone else's control.0

Doesn't work anymore, unless you transfer your domain to them.0 -

anyways, just wait for jamroll to activate ur account, probably tomorrow. then they'll give u a control panel username and password. in the control panel, there's loadsa programs if u click the icon "fantastico". there are some content managers like php-nuke that u can install easily by clicking a button, and there you can edit the whole website fromstart to finish. there is also a template manager thingi that gives u professionally designed templates that u can build on.
any problems? just gimme a quick message.0 -
i reg'd with 123reg and hosting with jamroll. I can not recommend highly enough.
I used to pay £20 a year with a provider supporting php/mysql and jamroll's servers are just soo much faster. The advertising is non intrusive, simply 5 tiny google words at the bottom of your site.0 -

I run my golf club website through 123-reg, and the domain name cost (.co.uk) was only £6 for 2years.
The hosting charge with them is about £25
You must have bought a real expensive domain name?0 -
i have a question, what does it mean when they say 5Gb bandwidth?Where is the pub? :beer:0

i have a question, what does it mean when they say 5Gb bandwidth?
When a person visits your website the server (jamroll) uses "bandwidth" to copy the website to the person's PC. So the more people who visit your website a month, the more bandwidth you will use.
bandwidth is the total amount of data sent from the webserver to visitors
It totally depends what media is on your website and how many people will visit but I can safely say 5GB/month is more than enough for 99.9% people who want a personal website.
You can ask for more anyway, jamroll love to help.0
