As for the 46k house, it was worth 46k when I was 10, 90's time, i think they bought it for less than that 14 years earlier.
Originally you said, "Parents paid off mortgage 10 years early (only 46k mortgage but was hard for them) Saw my dad lose his job through redudancy... "
So did you get it wrong or had your parents been mewing? Must have been hard to cope with redundancy when they had mewed.Sell £1500

I think we'd all find it easy to pay off a £10k (probably less including deposit) mortgage. It'd be interesting to see how your parents would have coped if they bought a comparable family home within the last few years at hundreds of thousands of pounds. I dare say that your father's redundancy would have been harder hitting than it was, especially given that it's now so much more expensive to raise a family; even before you add on the costs of servicing a large mortgage.
I think this is what people have a problem with when you make your ranting statements. If you were married with kids, had to buy an expensive family home for the kids (i.e. because you wanted a stable environment to raise them in, close to good schools and within a nice neighbourhood), possibly had your wife not working due to childcare (or working part time) and had the burden of buying school clothes, extra food, larger electricity bills and all the other expenses that come with having kids AND then you made these sorts of remarks then people might not get on your back as much about them.
As it is, you're renting a small place for two people (and let's face it, as you're at work all day, have no interest in schools or the neighbours - and their children - you may be renting in a less salubrious location than you'd be in if you had a family), you have two good incomes, you have little or no outgoings and you have the security of knowing that if you or your wife loses their job, the other's income will keep you afloat. Yes, good qualifications to be able to look down on others who are not so lucky and pompously dictate what they should have done in the past.
