  • Just for the record, Audi's are far from bomb proof. They are great cars but don't be fooled into thinking that nothing goes wrong, it can and they can be very expensive. Resale value also tends to be something of a myth - our fared no better or worse than most other makes.

Having said that, just go with what you like - cars have a great way of making you feel good, so if you like one over another just go for it. Everyone elses view is just that - our own and very subjective!

Find some quotes for the typical annual service and parts like brake discs you may have to get replaced. Any difference in service intervals etc?

That said, I am hardly going to tell you not to select something you like even if it is a bit more expensive am I? :o

If like me you spend some time in the car each week day and in my case it's 28miles on motorway and dual carriageway, then comfort and safety in event of a crash are essential. Check the NCAP ratings for the options you have in mind and JD Power survey on reliability.

Oh Stuart..never a truer word spoken. I have just returned from the hospital, my father has been involved in a serious car accident, he was hit head on a by a small vehicle, the driver of the other car was killed. Luckily my dad, although very shaken, bruised and still ungoing loads of test/x-rays appears to be stable. He has two cars, an MG and a people carrier, thank god he was driving the people carrier or I may too be greiving like that other poor family rather than wondering 'what if'.
I have too say the first thing I thought when the police knocked the door was oh **** what car was he in. I know i'm rambling but I just cannot go to bed as obviously I am relieved for my Dad but very upset that someone has lost their life tonight. It certainly puts things into perspective, sod the MPG/low tax I want something SAFE.

Sorry to go on, i'm just so upset.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

Thank you for your kind words. We are waiting to hear from the hospital as he is due to have a CT scan and the op on his leg this morning. His hips were are very painful which is also a worry as he had them operated on about 4 years ago. To be honest I'm just so greatful he is alive, when the police came to the house and told us to get to the hospital straight away I couldn't help but think the worse.

I'm not sure how he is going to cope when he is told about the death of the other driver(he was in far too much shock to tell him last night) , it appears that dad was driving as normal and the other car lost control and spun over onto dads side of the road hitting him head on, although it doesn't seem like there is anything dad could of done i'm sure this is something that he will forever question himself about......why didn't I leave 5 mins earlier, what if I had been in the other car...etc... We will know more when the police ring later.

I love you lot and all your support, sometimes its easier to vent 'annonimously'(sp?) on here than in 'real' life.

TPA so sorry about your dad, hopefully they are just being careful and the CT will be fine. It's really scary when something like that happens, and I'm sure he will question the day, but he just has to remember he couldn't have done anything differently. I'll keep him in my prayers this week.

For the record the A3 is an NCAP 4* for an adult, if you want a 5* then look at a Golf.

    Hi everyone

Test results so far all clear. Physically he has broken in ankle in two places and has the biggest bruises I have ever seen all over his body. His leg has been stitched up as has his hand. He is remembering parts of the collison and its not nice. The police came to speak to him today and told him that the other driver had been killed instantly in the accident, I fear this is going to take far longer to recover from than the physical effects of the crash.

All the witnesses seem to be saying the same thing, Dad didn't have time to react to the collision...still knowing a car has hit you and someone has lost their life is never going to be a easy thing to live with......but thank god he is living xx

My heart goes out to the family and friends of the man killed, no one should have to deal with that.

As you say, concern for the bereaved family and also for your father's recovery; I mentioned safety originally due my suffering a major car accident on black ice in my late 20s, nearly twenty years ago (not speeding etc, but at 55mph skidded on the ice and dropped over 20ft embankment into 5ft ditch surviving because I was thrown sideways as the car rolled - I can remember every detail even now).

I hope your father can get behind the wheel again and be able to drive that section of road in future but I am sure the incident will always remain in his memory, perhaps knowing the other driver didn't suffer prolonged injury may help him find solace to some degree.
