    to the casey's....

perhaps you have achieved quite a bit, but these shows are not doing you justice if this is the case.

    other parts that are funny....

I like the accumulator theory, wow a stats maths question.

Rent out your house ? how is that paying it off in 2 years, surely its just getting people to pay it for you.. and the possibilities of bad tenants.

all these "original ideas" but they are not making any money.

now cleaning for 10pound an hour, why not do this night shifts in a factory and pocket 500 a week ?
  • Loved the jewellry company but cannot find it when googling-a missed opportunity for the couple taking part. I thought they did well dismissing his wilder schemes and finally going for what they thought would be a money spinner.

Although we have a flashy presenter and lots of jargon up front the people who have got the most out of the programme are those who have dared to dream their own dreams.

To me it is irrelevant whether these people pay their mortgages off because couple 1(Sean and Ann Marie) are finally doing what they want to do. They have both started doing "jobs" that they love. The programme skates over all the practical stuff but they are working and living their lives with a new purpose. The programme was simply the catalyst for change.

Couple 4 look like they have big dreams too-lots of new experiences and a new perspective on why you work and live.
Not everyone will benefit from the series and it is easy to sneer but people are doing similar things all over the country they just arn't on TV and have decided to do it anyway!
The good thing about the programme for all its failings is that it provokes discussion and thought about what the puropse of life is.

Good luck to all concerned :T

Hi there, I'm quite enjoying the shows so far, it's made me and my BF think about things a bit more (we are saving to buy a house). Even if the couples don't manage to pay everything off after 2 years (and would have 'failed' in some people's eyes), every little helps to bring the costs of the mortgage and interest down, right?
What I think the presenter should point out when he draws the line on the house to indicate which part is yours and which part is the banks, is that whatever the proportions, the bank has got all the power! If for whatever reason you can't pay your mortgage for a bit, they can take it all away no matter how much of it you own.

Well yes, that is rather obvious. If you could save £100k or whatever whilst living in a cardboard box or in your parents' airing cupboard, you could pay cash for your house and never have to have a mortgage at all.

The reality is that we have to live somewhere: that renting is only a good idea in the short term: that we tend to want to buy a house at the same time as starting a family and money is short: so a mortgage is the answer for most people. Once you have it, and whilst inflation is low, then paying off as much as you can afford is a good idea. But I doubt if more than 1% of people have a realistic chance of "paying off the mortgage in 2 years".

By the way - I DID manage to pay off a mortgage early - but only by luck (building society windfalls).

I've just watched episode four from video and thought it was possibly the best yet. Not quite as wild as episode 1, but they had a combination of ideas and determination to follow the ideas up. This couple really applied themselves properly and seemed to think things through properly. They looked at the speed dating thing and quickly realised it wasn't a great idea. The jewelery stand in the shopping centre was inspired. Their cheap photography idea was great too. I really enjoyed watching this one.

I find the programme quite thought provoking and motivational. Our goal is to get our mortgage paid by September 2008 and it is helping me to realise that although we make overpayments every month it won't be enough if we are to meet our target, and is pushing us therefore to come up with ways to make more cash.
