So do you think panel heaters with a single rate electricity would be better for me, with the hot water changed to instantaneous heat or to keep what I have and run the water heater over night on E7 and use panel heaters during the day?

I guess another option is the relatively new duoheat radiators that are a combination of the two. I wouln't want these in the bedrrom though as would be hot overnight and thats not good for sleeping. I could just put one panel heater in there though?!

Youy haven't said if your primary aim is to save money or to be warmer for the same money?

I guess warmer for the same money or certainly having more control over the tempretaure in the whole flat as opposed to just the lounge.

I'm not keen on spending more if I can help it but if its marginal I'd rather have the controlability

Bill - On our storage heaters I think the boost is just how much heat it lets out from what it has heated up during the day - I believe we have a different "economy 7" circuit that just has the heaters on and, only works overnight, so I don't see how using that could costs extra? Possibly I have the wrong end of the stick though, or yours work differently.

My thinking as well. Because I only have two dials on my heaters. a boost and the input level. both 1 - 5. The heaters do nothing but go warm, so I need to be able to use the boost to allow the heat into the room. There is so much confusion about these things and different prices, usage, its unreal.

Received a letter from the council regarding heating improvements but this could take a while. headed 2009-2010. Handy if they do mine first!

  • Thanks for all the responses guys, even though I ticked the "instant email notification" i had not received an email so didnt think anyone had responded to my topic.

To answer some of the earlier questions and let other people know what we have.

We have 3 Storage heaters for the whole house, its not enough! Our energy supplier is British Gas on Economy 7, and I have read that E7 is actually more expensive overall, but getting the meter changed can be a pain!
Our storage heaters are wired into a ring, that only gets electricity in the 7 economy hours, which are currently 12:30 - 7:30 and in the summer its 1:30 - 8:30. There is a big click from the meter when it swops to E7 and the heaters come on.

We have the heater settings to input 5 (highest) and output 1, then in the evenings we turn that upto 3-5 to get some boost into the room.

I will take a look at the meter later to see what its actually displaying as the rate now. I think im also going to invest in an OWL energy reader because something is eating up the power during the day!

We seem to use loads more in the day than at night too - our last bill was £237.01 before VAT - in November we used 221 in the night and 787 in the day, in December I started maternity leave, so was home pretty much all the time, and it is 248 at night and 885 during the day!

DH is not very good at turning off his laptop, so that tends to be running 24/7 (I try and get him to switch it off in the day, and leave it on overnight if he is downloading stuff, but he swears that it doesn't use much electricity - I can't get through to him that even if it's not much, we could do with not paying for it!!!)

What are the settings other than boost? Usually the input and output levels control exactly that, and boost is to top up the heat with new electricity if the heat does not last the day. The fact that you are using so much more electricity in the daytime would rather suggest that the boost function is using additional day-rate electricity, and/ or you are heating water and/ or using a tumble dryer in the daytime.

Eon is not known for being cheap - have you looked to simply switch suppliers? I have Dimplex radiant panel heater and find they take up to two hours to get the room to temperature, but then a good while to cool down again. Not particularly controllable. Why are you unhappy with your oil radiators? If you want instant heat that doesn't last you probably want some sort of fan heater.

Eon comes out fairly well on price this way, I'll double check it is still cheapest but I switched to them for being the cheapest.

It's not that I don;t like the oil filled radiators its just they are quite ugly things to look at as I have the ones on castors. My thinking being if I had the new panel type heaters they are quite attractive and would fit to the wall.
  • I read elsewhere on this site that E-on are expensive - this is all very confusing. We've decided to watch our useage (considering an OWL too) and move out asap. When we move out, the first question to a new lettings agent would be about heating! lesson learnt there.

There is more being used at night, latest meter reading was 60356 night, 34482 day. Previous units have showed 313 night, 26 day etc.

60356 units is about £3000 if you pay about 5p per unit. day rate is about 20-30p a unit
