R U on Economy 7 with storage Heaters?

Energy efficient say it is my turning up of the boost/output control that is costing me so much. I assumed this is how storage heaters worked? input set and heat gathered for heat to be released at convenience at night? which I have been doing. aargh, its all confusing. they are just getting switched off.
Can you confirm when you are using these storage heaters. If have them on during the day time rate, they will cost ££££££ to run! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

I was told by my council to leave them switched on all the time. They will then come on during the night if input level is switched up and leave heat for during the next day and boost (open flap) option for releasing at night.0 -

When we had them, we had input on max and output on min - often tempted to turn output up during the day but resisted because the heat never lasted the day anyway.0 -
Magentasue- same here, we have the input on max and output on min, as they only turn on in the day.
I've given up on trying to perfect the storage heaters efficiency. They're awful at heating big rooms anywayIf you aim for the moon if you miss at least you will land among the stars!0 -
I'm on E7 and for past week my usage has been
Day-95kw
Night-308
Thats for 1 storage heater in L/R on at high
1 in hall also on high
1 upstairs between both bedrooms set at medium
Also in L/R I have a oil filled radiator set on 800w medium
that is on 24/7 to keep temp at 72f0 -

OK fine, it was the fact that you mentioned boost. I believe that some storage heaters also have a daytime boost element that is wired to the day rate and this will obviously cost at lot if it is used, as E7 day rate is usually more expensive than a standard rate tariff.
I'm afraid that I agree with what others have said, that they are an expensive waste of space. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
We seem to use loads more in the day than at night too - our last bill was £237.01 before VAT - in November we used 221 in the night and 787 in the day, in December I started maternity leave, so was home pretty much all the time, and it is 248 at night and 885 during the day!
DH is not very good at turning off his laptop, so that tends to be running 24/7 (I try and get him to switch it off in the day, and leave it on overnight if he is downloading stuff, but he swears that it doesn't use much electricity - I can't get through to him that even if it's not much, we could do with not paying for it!!!)
Bill - On our storage heaters I think the boost is just how much heat it lets out from what it has heated up during the day - I believe we have a different "economy 7" circuit that just has the heaters on and, only works overnight, so I don't see how using that could costs extra? Possibly I have the wrong end of the stick though, or yours work differently.Isabella Molly born 14th January 2009

Hi,
I'm really interested in this topic as I am currently looking at my whole setup. I live in a one bed falt and have only one storage heater in the living room. I have it set on max and it seems ok but nowhere else is heated!!
I have two oil filled radiators that I use to supplement the heat. One is placed in the bedroom and is set to come on between 7-8am and 9-10pm and one in the hallway which comes on about 4-6pm to 'top' up the heat in the flat.
My water is heated overnight with an immersion heater set for the times of E7 (which I got by asking EON).
It seems to work well and I'm coping ok in the cold snap but I'm thinking of getting panel heaters installed into the bedrrom and hallway and a heated towel rail for the bathroom.
I am with EON on E7 and my night consumption for the last year was 3619kWh against aday consumption of 2562kWh.
Even so I have looked today and you can find some single tariffs that offer electricity at 9.5p per kWh which I think would work out slightly cheaper overall!!
It is so confusing, but my thinking is if I had the panel heaters they would only come on when they needed to and not all night like the storage heater therefore using less units overall. The only thing would be the water heating but I'm thinking of getting an instantaneous heater which again will resolve any problem of heating too much and losing out.

58% of your electricity at night rates is quite good; as it a total consumption of just over 6,000kWh
However as you imply, if you are out during the day a lot of the heat that 'leaks' during the day is wasted. So your overall consumption will be less.0 -
So do you think panel heaters with a single rate electricity would be better for me, with the hot water changed to instantaneous heat or to keep what I have and run the water heater over night on E7 and use panel heaters during the day?
I guess another option is the relatively new duoheat radiators that are a combination of the two. I wouln't want these in the bedrrom though as would be hot overnight and thats not good for sleeping. I could just put one panel heater in there though?!0
