Nice towns and villages around Glasgow

Burside is a lovely place, just over 4 miles to glasgow and same to East Kilbride, good Motorway network connections, access to public transport, excellent schools, selection on nice wee shops well used by the locals and superb housing stock. Worth a look0

There's a nice village called Elderslie between Johnstone and Renfrewshire. Has a good primary school and regular buses to Glasgow. As for a train service Johnstone train station is right on the edge of Elderslie and Johnstone and trains run to Glasgow on average every 15/20 minutes.
Exactly what I was thinking whilst reading through this thread. Birthplace of William Wallace no less
Wallace Primary is one of the best schools in the West Of Scotland when you look at HMI reports for the past few years. Some quality housing built on the old stoddards land has brought a lot of professional families into the village who are sending their kids to that school and taking quite an interest in PTA & School Council which is making the school even more effective.
Transport links are excellent and a lot of the houses have nice rural views as the village sits at the bottom of the braes. 5 minute drive from Glasgow Airport. 12mins train journey to/from Glasgow centre which run every 10-15mins. 35mins train in the other direction to the coast (Ayr etc). Small shopping centre in Johnstone which is 10-15 mins walk away, or 2 large shopping centres within 15minute drive (Braehead & Silverburn). A couple of very nice small restaurants locally too. Large Morrisons supermarket and small Somerfield in Johnstone, with a large Asda and Large Tesco 10 mins drive away. Nice Golf club too if that interests you. It also has a small swimming pool by the village hall. There was a library too but that closed last year and a mobile library service is in place.
Since the village is near Paisley the house prices are very reasonable - but the village is a million miles away from Paisley in terms of what it's like IMO.0 -
I lived in bothwell with my parents and now live in uddingston. There is a train station in uddingston and it takes 20,mins by train and by car into glasgow, as well as great motorways links to different areas. Uddingston has nice local shops as well as driving to the fort, ek for clothes shopping etc. Hope you find a nice place to live. Mu hubbie moved to uddingston from bishopbriggs and loves the village feeling of uddingston.
Another vote for Uddingston/Bothwell. Bothwell is slightly more desirable in some areas, but Uddingston overall is really nice and has a train station as mentioned above. It's right on the M8 for Glasgow and Edinburgh and also the M73/M74. It's just so handy that I don't know why we moved! Actually it was because the house prices were too high and we wanted a bigger house but couldn't afford one there. I would move back in a flash though.0 -
Prestwick's great0

You might have a few problems getting a place at Wallace PS, the nursery is having to turn away children because of lack of spaces. The local high school is Castlehead in Paisley which does have a few problems. Both Johnstone and Paisley have social problems but so does Elderslie. Good transport links.
Bridge of Weir is great with a excellant high School - Gryffe but transport is a bit more difficult, Same with Lochwinnoch.
Did anyone recommend Howwood? - there is a train service stopping there now and I think the schools are meant to be okay.
There are a lot of lovely smaller villages on the Paisley border but they are bound pretty much to Johnstone and Paisley in terms of resources so at the moment are doing pretty badly.0 -

Neilston - isn't there a decent Butcher Shop? But have not the poor souls lately sought outside help in fixing the place:

Houston - kinda village that transitory L-reg Jeep buyers would rent in?
Fintry - did I read one of the most private number plate registered postcodes in GB?
East Renfrewshire ~ if you want to live in Kilmarnock, why not move to Kilmarnock?
Glasgow - the wealthy ones would chose to live in Thortonhall or Killearn now, not in the West End.
Get a rail map and figure out your 1hour travel constraint ~ think you'll find Haymarket fits the bill!.
I take offence at being labelled a 'poor soul' and living in a dump. I CHOSE to live here, we moved almost 17 years ago and have since grown to love the place. I love how we can walk for five minutes max and be right in the heart of gorgeous countryside.
The schools are fantastic, and Neilston Primary is a feeder school for Eastwood High, also a good school.
The Renaissance project has been several years in the making from local people - one lady a VERY highly respected architect at the spearhead.
I love living here - especially as we can overlook Glasgow and see the smog overhanging the city!0 -
Aplogoies, but whilst you're here, just spinning this out a little bit wider, could anyone help with decent restaurants in Renfrewshire?
I've got a lunch coming up and wasn't wanting to go to those cafes in Kilmacolm again.
Know of Raeburn's in Paisley, the French one in Kilbarchan and Mar Hall at Erskine. Someone said that one of the Houston ones had stepped up a level?0 -
hi, we live in wemyss bay which is just lovely, it has a real community feel and the kids all play out in the street together. The primary school is also great. My husband commutes to Glasgow every day (about 45min train ride) and the house prices are good, a 4 bed detached for about £180-220,000.
Bishopton is also great and nearer to Glasgow, it's a wee bit bigger than wemyss bay but still has a great community and fab primary school.0 -

If not too late.French one has gone but the pub is still there.Fox & Hounds in Houston is the ONLY one worth the visit.Cail Bruich in Quarriers is good (shut Mon. & Tue.) ; Uplawmoor Hotel good; Gateside Inn good; Braidwoods Dalry, great but impossible to book unless for lunch; Bowfield good.Enjoy.Regards,N.Never be afraid to take a profit.

Hi,
thanks for all the replies, really appreciated and we have every single suggestion on our list to check out.
We have been to a LOT of places and have a lot more to go to. To be honest we didn't really like Uddingston (or Paisley). Our top 2 places are still Lanark and East Kilbride, we just love them both. Also on our short list we have:
Helensburgh (but severe lack of 4 bed houses on the market!)
Bridge of Weir
Lochwinnoch
We like Killearn and surrounding areas
Bearsden and Newton Mearns also really nice but too pricey for us
Can't believe I left Scotland for almost 4 years. This house hunting tour has really brought me back for good! Well never say never :-)
Many thanks again
Lochwinnoch is OK but its the only place I know that has a security person on duty in the shop at the cross at night time !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's (very) youngsters that cause the trouble. Regards,N.Never be afraid to take a profit.
