I Live in EK - and love it ! There are a few nice estates, a lot of good schools and plenty to do at the weekend with a young family. Plenty of parks , a few museums, cinema etc. The train takes half an hour and there is a regular ( twice hourly) service from both the Village and Hairmyres Stations. I wouldn't live any where else ( unless I won the lottery of course!!)

  • Bearing in mind you can get from Perth to Glasgow in less than an hour I think you have a pretty huge scope to select from! Infact Edinburgh is 45 mins...

I live in the West End of Glasgow and love it! But could recommend Bearsden, Milngavie, Newton Mearns, Clarkston, Busby... all lovely but quite pricey!
I miss using my infinite coupons at Tesco!
2010 was the worst year ever :(
But 2011 so far has been a lot of fun! :j

Many suggestions, our criteria was, being able to walk somewhere nice without using the car all the time (the canal), good links to the city (ies) a good sports centre with pool, easy access to motorway for exploring. We chose Falkirk....good house prices, a mix of property types and town living or smaller village living as the outlying areas have quite distinct community feel. The fast Glasgow-Edinburgh train line which also serves Stirling and north of that is such a bonus for work opportunities. Falkirk secondary schools are more disappointing...I think St Modans is the best...but we hope that home is the greater nurturer!
  • I grew up in Helensburgh and would move back in a second (moved away to live with bf). House prices are dropping at the moment which is good as you can get some nice big houses for around £250K and under. Its got a nice mix of shops, although I find to do a proper grocery shop you need to go to Dunbarton (15 mins away), but its 44 mins by train to glasgow, trains every half an hour and more frequently in the mornings, takes about 40 mins to drive to glasgow and the airport. plently of taxis, good beauticians and hairdressers (always a must have lol) some nice restaurants. Only downside's I would say is there is only one secondary school and if you have younger children there are no activities like bowling or cinema in the immediante vicinity and you need to travel to Clydebank (20 mins drive) for either of those activities.

    Hi Tigger

I don't know the south side as well as I do the north side. If you wanted to come to this end of town and you like Lanark, you might quite like the small towns of Drymen, Strathblane, Killearn and Balfron. I think the catchment area secondary school for these towns/villages is Balfron High which is very newly built and has a good name. It would maybe take 35 minutes to get into the middle of town from there by car. I'm not sure about train links.

Closer in (and with train stations!) are Bearsden and Milngavie which have excellent secondary schools. In the same area are Kirkintilloch, Bishopbriggs and Lenzie. All are 'good' areas with good schools.

Regrettably I don't think there is anywhere that is 100% safe these days. Don't be put off looking in these areas by thoughts of high house prices. The prices actually aren't all that much different from other areas - people just expect them to be more. Its a buyers market!

    Good luck
  • I also grew up in Helensburgh, but now live in the west end of Glasgow. Helensburgh is very scenic, and about 45 minutes from the city. There's two secondary schools if you include the public school ;) or one in Dumbarton. The views are still breathtaking after living there/visiting my parents for the last 21 years, with the Clyde out the window and minutes from Loch Lomond. The shopping is a bit small, especially grocery shopping being a bit of a pain, but there's plenty public transport.

I would recommend renting in any area before you move though, and best of luck with finding your new home!

I lived in bothwell with my parents and now live in uddingston. There is a train station in uddingston and it takes 20,mins by train and by car into glasgow, as well as great motorways links to different areas. Uddingston has nice local shops as well as driving to the fort, ek for clothes shopping etc. Hope you find a nice place to live. Mu hubbie moved to uddingston from bishopbriggs and loves the village feeling of uddingston.
