Nice towns and villages around Glasgow

I don't really know what Paisley itself is like as I have only ever been to the hospital there when taking people for treatment,it's bad enough trying to find the place ! I always seem to get lost finding my way there or coming back from there. I guess I also am a city girl !
I think it's terrible that people are expected to travel to Paisley from Helensburgh for hospital treatment also the families having to get there as well to visit.0 -
Thanks Nodwah, you have managed to upset me. You'd obviously rather live in a 70's house you have to do up than live in a nicer ( and better value) one in Barrhead, which for your information has some nice areas in it ( I happen to live in one ). Certainly there are also some not nice ( to be polite) areas too, but Barrhead is a proper town, not a suburb of Glasgow as Newton Mearns is ) and therefore they cannot be compared. You might as well say that Glasgow is a dump on the grounds that it has some dodgy areas! Thanks for offending me and anyone else who chooses to live in Barrhead and Neilston. Oh and it is possible to walk into some lovely countryside from my house whereas in much of Newton Mearns you have to walk for quite a distance through housing estates for ages ( or take your car ). I'm not saying the Mearns is not nice but please think of who you might be upsetting before claiming somewhere is a 'dump'.Look at East Renfrewshire esp Newton Mearns, Giffnock, Netherlee, Clarkston Busby and Eaglesham if you want tiny look at Uplawmoor -the county has the best schools in Scotland and all the rich folk up here are taking their kids out of private school and sending them to Mearns Castle High, Williamwood and St Ninians (RC).
Great for links to town but far enough away not to feel Inner city! We get a lot of "country" smells - we're right on the edge of N Mearns- open country
Lots of shopping opportunities for your missus in Ek and Silverburn Shopping centre but maybe you wouldn't like that!
Trains and buses into town aplenty (train about 30 mins)
Some incredibly expensive property but you can also get bargains in this economic climate, there are a lot of 1970's properties that are ripe for upgrading (which is what we're doing, slowly) that you can get for a decent price but there's also new developments that they now can't sell and are giving away great deals - like I've seen some that will pay all your bills for a year food, leccy, insurance petrol etc
Whatever you do don't think about Neilston - it's a DUMP! ( or Barrhead for that matter)My favourite subliminal message is;0 -
Largs - nice view but 'Surfers Against Sewage ' gives the lie to the beach life there.
Neilston - isn't there a decent Butcher Shop? But have not the poor souls lately sought outside help in fixing the place:

Houston - kinda village that transitory L-reg Jeep buyers would rent in?
Fintry - did I read one of the most private number plate registered postcodes in GB?
East Renfrewshire ~ if you want to live in Kilmarnock, why not move to Kilmarnock?
Glasgow - the wealthy ones would chose to live in Thortonhall or Killearn now, not in the West End.
Get a rail map and figure out your 1hour travel constraint ~ think you'll find Haymarket fits the bill!.0 -

It ok I used to live in Barrhead so I'm qualified to have an opinion and we go walking up on the Neilston pad and my Dh fishes all the dams and we have actually looked at houses so I know Neilston too - I could have bought a 70's house in Neilston too you know. One day we will get to have a lovely sandstone house but we're working up to it like people with modest means do -so don't go offening people who have to live in 70's houses and don't have that much money
And an awful lot of Glasgow is a dump too
i used to live in renfrew which was a dump all through the 70's but now is a bit of a dump with a big shopping centre
I don't have rose coloured spectacles about the place - I just look at how my insurance quotes change for residence to residence!
When we moved to barrhead, my husband's friend who is a policeman said "you're moving where???"
Every town has it's nice areas and bad areas but the proportions change and I couldn't in conscience recommend someone to live in places where I've had bad experiences.
N Mearns is a town in it's own right fyi don't know where you get that idea - we both have G postcodes don't we?
And btw I look at a field and trees from my front windowJust call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -

Knowing nothing about the place, I'd always assumed that Renfrew was pleasant & quiet. Am I wrong? Central business district is ok, the outlying areas are safer to avoid? Looks like nice housing Arkleston, Cockles Loan?
True the bit near the ferry looks a bit sad now & the Brown Instituite ? always seems to be closed.
I thought Trinity High was ok, no?

Nodwah;
Not that it really matters much but having a G postcode doesn't mean anything apart from administrative convenience, they don't give every small town a postcode of its own.
Anyway, I still think it's upsetting to have the whole of the area you live in described as a dump - what sort of person would choose to live in 'a dump'?
Maybe I'm too sensitive.
To the OP: The good thing about Glasgow is that there is a very wide choice of quite rural areas round about within reasonable commuting distance of both the city and of the Highlands and Islands and the Clyde coast. It's difficult to suggest which direction, really but a look at the Strathclyde Passenger Transport maps/services might be a good idea if you're thinking about trains etc.My favourite subliminal message is;0 -
There's a nice village called Elderslie between Johnstone and Renfrewshire. Has a good primary school and regular buses to Glasgow. As for a train service Johnstone train station is right on the edge of Elderslie and Johnstone and trains run to Glasgow on average every 15/20 minutes.Bought, not Brought0

Polmont - it's cheaper than Linlithgow, it's halfway between Glasgow and Edinburgh, and has a train station that the train stops regularly at.
It's why my inlaws live there - easy to cover the Edinburgh job pool aswell as Glasgow for the sectors they are in.
Good access to motorways and EDI airport is only 20 mins away come holiday time.
It is missing a beach, but it does have the canal/towpath area for nice walks etc.Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

TBH the place is a mixed bag. I live on the edge of the west end of Glasgow and it's surprising to see that all along the stretch of one main road on one side the houses are all very nice and the areas further in but the other side of the road is less reputable.
There are (as everyone has already said) places with good and bad parts. I can't comment on any towns outwith the city as I have only lived in the city but the suburbs are all quite decent - Bearsden, Milngavie, Bishopbriggs etc.0
