what about Ayr or Prestwick - regular train service to Glasgow - not too pricey for housing - straight up the A77 to Glasgow - couple of good schools - not too big a town but not too small, really happy living here0

I love EK but if you wanted something more rural then what about Eaglesham?TRYING hard to be a good money saver :rolleyes:0

I lived in bothwell with my parents and now live in uddingston. There is a train station in uddingston and it takes 20,mins by train and by car into glasgow, as well as great motorways links to different areas. Uddingston has nice local shops as well as driving to the fort, ek for clothes shopping etc. Hope you find a nice place to live. Mu hubbie moved to uddingston from bishopbriggs and loves the village feeling of uddingston.
yayy for uddy!!! me tooTime is the best teacherShame it kills all the students*******************************************************************************************0 -
Born and brought up in Gourock, I'd have to say it's a lovely wee town with links by boat and rail to all areas in the West of Scotland. There are many really nice areas and beautiful houses, with schools regularly coming amongst the top of the league tables for Scotland.
Also, the views are spectacular!
so please press my :T thanks :Tbutton x

I think you need to decide your priorities. Is it schools, or less expensive housing, or access to the city.
We live in Bearsden, before that we lived in Gourock, with a lovely view of the Clyde. We moved here 21 years ago as OH's office had been moved to Glasgow city centre and the travelling was taking its toll.
If you want to be within easy and reasonably priced commuting distance you need to be in somewhere like Newton Mearns, Clarkston, Bearsden, Milngavie, maybe Bishopbriggs, Duntocher, Clydebank, Renfrew.
They all have their attributes, Bearsden and Newton Mearns have the most expensive housing, but good schools and easy access to the city centre.
Further out I would fancy Helensburgh, East Kilbride, Killearn, Kilmalcolm and surrounding area, Gourock, Langbank.0 -
Hi,
thanks for all the replies, really appreciated and we have every single suggestion on our list to check out.
We have been to a LOT of places and have a lot more to go to. To be honest we didn't really like Uddingston (or Paisley). Our top 2 places are still Lanark and East Kilbride, we just love them both. Also on our short list we have:
Helensburgh (but severe lack of 4 bed houses on the market!)
Bridge of Weir
Lochwinnoch
We like Killearn and surrounding areas
Bearsden and Newton Mearns also really nice but too pricey for us
Can't believe I left Scotland for almost 4 years. This house hunting tour has really brought me back for good! Well never say never :-)
Many thanks again0 -

All 3 equally I'd say (we want it all!). We're not going all our for any 1 in particular.0 -
Oh a few people mentioned Gourock, we are going to check this place out next (we have been to all these places but you really need to go with the "could we live here" question in your head).0

I think it depends on what you want.
One consideration is this. TRAVEL :-)
I live in the west end (North Kelvinside) For <£315K you can get a 2xlivingroom 4 bedroom flat. In our tenement property they are all families we have 3 teachers one surgeon and one uni prof. we have a gardener as well. It is a Brilliant place to stay.
Alternatively you could end up in a tennement with idiots. I would take the plunge and rent for 6 months and look for something.
I only have to use my car once a week. I can walk to Byres road for a breakfast on Sunday in Oran Mor (I know there are some weegies on here that will know the place). I can pop down any evening to a dozen restaurants.
In a small town (I come from one) you have one shop, one chippy that sells a pizza if your lucky. If your really lucky a chinese or asian take away....if your lucky.
in the west end there is the Botanic gardens (3 mins away) the kelvin walkway (2 mins) and Partic Thistle for rubbish footy (5 mins away).
Cheers

On your drive to Gourock from Glasgow you'll pass Port Glasgow.
For God's sake keep driving........:rotfl:0
