booo hoooo hoooo thacther took the milk away. at least she didn't take away learning!!! this lot have ruined a generation, and probably the next generation as well.
no discipline, lousy teachers. its hopeless. still, as long as some nonsensical targets are met, they think they are doing well.
this govt has failed everyone - except those on benefits.
You know, whenever I see you pop up onto a thread I find myself helplessly realising that the morons have arrived and that their main aim is to disrupt a perfectly agreeable thread with interesting, well modulated and intelligent discussion with a diatribe of uneducated rubbish worthy of a sink estate;) .
In view of your user name, you will have to excuse me for imagining an overly young licensee of a not particularly pleasant pub in a not very nice area who has over-imbibed by lunch-time and ought to return to his nest beneath a bridge;) .
Please excuse my scathing retort - I see people like you as being the dumb ones who perpetuate the situation and cannot see anything but what the Daily Mail would want them to see.
There are people on here who have intelligent discussions and are willing to learn from each other: that is the way forward, and you would do well to stop your back of the class disruptions and remember that you are given two eyes, two ears and only one mouth because there is more to be learnt in this life than there is to be spat out in a diatribe of hate."there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -

I used to think about three moves ahead in the days when I was "good" (I was never actually very good, but I did fluke winning the West Yorkshire schools championship once).
Nowadays I can't be bothered, and have played so much that I just make the move that I think 'looks right' based on past experience, without thinking too hard about exactly where I'm going with it.
Bizarrely, despite this I have a better rating for last season than I ever had when I was playing 'seriously' at school. Not on huntersc's scale, only an English grade of 118, but still higher than I deserve. Will be back down next season based on current evidence.
Where is this young chap, there are chess clubs in some surprising places, and if you can find another youngster then you may have a lift and a new friend into the bargain
Hurrah, now I have more thankings than postings, cheers everyone!0 -

Totally agree, when I left school in around 1982 ish everybody could read and write, not the case now.
A friend of mine teaches at college, he showed me some forms that had been filled out by the new "students" the handwriting was ineligable ,some couldnt do joined-up writing and 2 of them (and I kid you not) didnt even spell there own names correctly.
They arent taught to form letters correctly and neatly and when it comes to the alphabet its not A-B-C-D-E, theyre taught to say how the letter sounds (phonics) .
Im sorry but the old saying is "if it aint broke, dont fix it".....
(yes I know my grammar is poor):rotfl: for me the 3"R"s come before any other lesson.especially religion....:rolleyes:0 -

Think thats harsh and not needed, if we can have a chat on here OFF thread about the virtues of the "rubiks cube" (which I havent got a problem with,in fact made me chuckle and yes I use to have to take it apart too:rotfl: ) then why cant white Horse say what they feel??...0 -

We are in the Wild, Wild, West of Wales - much further West and we would get wet feet:D . I have to admit (:o ) that I had never thought of seeking ways for him to enjoy this hobby (although he has pestered me to try to find ways of furthering another hobby - duelling Yu-Gi-Oh:eek: ) which I have not been successful in finding help for (and pleeeease do not go off on one, I thought that Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh were rubbish just going by the cartoons on TV - but they again use maths, strategies and skills that are worth encouraging in the card games) and I shall now look into this for him.
At the moment though, it might have to wait for anything that involves more travelling as he already does piano and archery and another expense might be difficult to find, but the on-line idea sounds quite possible:o"there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -

I only played at junior level seriously, but it was great fun.
Now I only play with my Dad and Bruv....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

I would truly agree with you:D , very harsh of me: and if you look back at my posts you would find that I am usually a moderate who tries very hard never to get annoyed by idiocy in posts.
However, as this "chant" and similar ones appear to be what Horsey posts at every post, and since this is not the Vent thread, I thought I would try replying in as similar a harsh and judgemental vein as that usually employed by the poster, and see what the reaction was:D . And, indeed, as I suspected someone jumped in to defend him and his "rights"!;)
After several months of visiting and posting on MSE I have to admit that if it were not for the fact that, overall, the ranters on MSE are in a small minority
(whom I usually, apart from the famous ones, ignore;) ) and that there are others capable of putting forward their arguments in a rational and intelligent fashion and of attempting to see the other side of the argument without their venom being dripped into the conversation, then I think I might have had to have given up on "humanity" altogether:D .
Small "conversations" within a thread add to the fun, repetitive drivel has nothing to add, and can end up with a thread being deleted and any good posts from it being trash-canned alongside the abusive. Thus this time I decided to "have a go" back:D .
If I am to agree with the "message" in Horsey's post it would be to say thank God then that at 50 I am old enough to have been a part of it all before all the dummying down occurred and despite my degree level education I can see no reason to view our current recessionary plight as being anything to do with Socialism and everything to do with Rampant Capitalist Greed: much in common with all previous recessions:D"there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -
It does. Halve housing costs, all work half time, no WTC, but everybody who wants one has a job. With all the spare time we'd have, we'd stimulate the economy's growth because we'd need to fill that time with activities, from DIY to learning a new skill or just shopping.Badger_Lady wrote: »PasturesNew, I think you suggested on Page 2 that we should all do this! It might be considered negative that you called a fact of everyday situation negative. That's the attitude we need.... negative.
I've never known any such employer, I have only heard of them here. I think that's probably big companies. I've never known cities or big companies.Oh and I've found myself (when I was employed) and from other people particularly if they work for a large employer they are willing to give you time of for a certain amount of voluntary work. Most people don't ask. Obviously with SMEs this may be harder to achieve.0 -
