I was told by someone some time ago that quitting was very similar to being an alcoholic, i.e. your still a smoker, you just don't actually smoke if that makes any sense.

    I agree with that.

Smokes never become non-smokers, they are just smokers who don't actually smoke anymore.

When you have that craving for nicotine, it will never go away totally forever.

I am saying this with 49 hours under my belt.

Still twitchy and dry-mouthed, feeling restless. COME ON:j

Hi all, great going so far for all by the looks of things. It's wonderful that you can all relate to each other and you've all given up around the same time. So link up and QUIT!!!! :T

I honestly don't agree with that at all. I quit 10 years ago and could NEVER go back, even though I mix with smokers. Alcoholism is said to be an illness, I truly don't agree the same can be said of ciggies. Smoking really disgusts me and has done for ages. All that people may talking about which remains a little is the occasional "what am I missing" feeling which only lasts seconds. You soon work out what it is, then it's gone - honestly! Trust me about that and you'll soon find out yourselves!!! :D

    Sue.

Graeme. Feeling restless can be quite natural as you're missing that evil drug that's kept you 'down', but do as much exercise as you possibly can - AND - drink as much water as possible, OJs too. If you can combine all of those with sucking occasional sour sweets you'll soon have things mastered. Eating apples also helps with having a dry mouth. Don't forget ice poles too, not quite the weather for them, but needs must!!!

  • Good luck to those of you trying to quit - I have been there and know how you are feeling!

I quit in May 2005 and haven't smoked since then apart from one ciggy on holiday a couple of months later. It made me feel so ill I haven't had the inclination since, despite several trials in my life since then which have been very stressful.

I also agree with Sue above - I too could NEVER go back to smoking simply because I know how much better I feel since I quit. I don't think I could bear the hacking cough I had every single morning when I smoked or the sore throats.

I also found it tough to quit - I smoked 40 a day for nearly 20 years () but the cost of it and the fact the ban was coming in made me persevere.

Good luck to all of you!

Smokes never become non-smokers, they are just smokers who don't actually smoke anymore.

Its a psychological thing though - if you call yourself an ex-smoker the fags still have some sort of grip on you - if you call yourself a non-smoker then you have the control over them IYSWIM.

Started the fitness routine went for a walk at 7am then another at 4pm - both for an hour a time. Could tell the difference with my breathing and can walk faster than previously - now hopefully that will help with losing the excess weight. Still need to keep my mind occupied though - is definately a boredom thing with me and the cigs.

    Hi Guys,

Anyone on here quitting with Champix? I went to the docs and got the prescription. Today I collected it from the chemist but I think they haven't given me the starter pack as the instructions don't seem to tally with what I've got. I'm going back to the chemist tomorrow to see if I can talk to the pharmacist before I start.

Anyway, well done everyone else who is in the process of quitting (no matter which way). 2009 is going to be our year :j

Keep up the good work everyone!!

Thank you to Sue-UU for the motivational words - i do intend to be breezing down the aisle smelling as fresh as a daisy!! :j

its so good to hear the stories of people who quit ages ago - i cant wait to be able to say 'i used to smoke, but gave up six years ago, and i dont miss it'!! :D im going to download the silkmeter and have a look at how much im saving everytime i have a craving!

i had my last one at 4pm today, and feel ok so far - i felt a bit twitchy after dinner, when i usually have one, but it didnt take long to pass - i think i'll get some clementines with the shopping as they seemed to have worked for a few of you!!

i wanted to go for a walk tonight, but OH wasnt too keen, so we are going tomorrow night - we have ice cubes freezing in the freezer and are going to have a couple of bailey's instead!! at least then neither of us can drive to the shop for cigs, so thats putting temptation out of my way lol!! :o

    hi
you are all do so well keep it up it does get easier. I have to agree with you sue-uu, alcoholism is an illness, smoking is not, it is just highly addictive. smoking now disgusts me I hate the smell and try not to inhale when passing someone wih a ciggie. I definitely class myself as a non-smoker and i can honestly say that i never think about having a ciggie now as I said before as time passes you think about smoking less and less and you will reach a point when you will thank your lucky stars that you gave up!!! Just think of your health, wealth and eventual happiness in not having to give into the feeling of I need a ciggie, BELIEVE ME YOU DON'T, each day is a step nearer to your goal!!

  • Well done to everyone, keep going. I've now done 44 hours, feel very restless tonight, like I am missing out on something. I keep telling myself that all I am missing out on is 5 minutes stood at the back door getting cold! Doing lots of cleaning, trying to keep busy. Think I will have another clementine.

  • Still haven't succumbed, despite been highly tempted a few times today, but think its more the association of doing particular events that makes me want a cig, I don't think I actually want it, its just a habit, am sure you know what I mean!

Anyway, I was feeling like I wanted one really badly earlier so have put my pJs on so I cant give in to temptation and go and get some! That should help, clementines next!!
