The Giving Up Smoking Thread!! Part 2

Hi netskii - Good for you.
I think operations are risky for smokers - something to do with the blood/clotting.
I had a friend who stopped pre -operation because of that - they were scared.
Fear works.
I felt like I was cheating with the Champix but as someone said, why make things intolerable when they can be so much easier & therefore more likely to suceed.
Why not have that sort of conversation with him & suggest he rids himself of the hair shirt philosophy. But I don't know if Champix would be okay if he's going into hospital & having an op. He needs scaring into going to speak to a doc.
He has to have a click moment - mine was a dental thing & the cat being ill/wheezy.
Even if you are just planting seeds & he thinks while lying in hospital about it all.
If he's going to be incapacitated for a while tell him now he'd better get his fags in before hand as you don't feel like getting them for him - so he'd better organise that side of things.
My OH never nagged me & I kinda wished he had in a way as I would have started on the stopping years back if he had. But that's me making excuses for smoking my lungs black for 30 plus years.0 -
Thanks Choille!! Funny I talked to him last night about giving up and someone had recently told him that it takes smokers a lot longer to recover after an operation than a non-smoker, and I think that had bells ringing in his head!! I'm now thinking I should be trying to get him to give up before he goes!
I'll have a look into Champix - I don't know anything about it, so I'll do a little research! I was thinking of getting patches and putting them on him through the night when he's sleeping so he can't protest....!!
My main worries are that I know if he's sitting about having to rest his leg for a week he'll be bored stupid and want to smoke to ease the boredom! Also the bad temper bit - does NRT help ease that?
Thanks for your help0 -
Champix isn't NRP - in that it has no nicotine in it.
I don't feel as stressed as I would have thought I would. But I can have my moments.
If he goes to a clinic/cessation officer - they have him fill in a questionairre to find out what 'type' of smoker he is & what would be the best way for him to stop & also give him coping tips.
You should send off for a quit pack - in Scotland they are a bit rubbish, but the English ones are fine I hear.
It's all about having a plan when you stop & he has to have a plan & he has to decide what he will do if he is going to be off work. Thing is if he smokes only when up & about he will not be able to do that. If he stays in bed he will find it easier to not smoke. You are allowed to stay in bed if it means you won't smoke.
He needs to go to speak with someone so they can make a plan.0 -
Hi Netskii welcome to the thread
glad he has made the desicion to want to stop whatebver the motivation i think there needs to be one .and he if he really reallly wants to stop he will get all the supoprt he needs

Hi Netski. Welcome. Maybe you should tell your hubby about us lot!
Perhaps he could just read some of our posts and see how despite it being somewhat difficult at times, that we are getting on with it and helping each other on the way.
Good luck to you both.Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

Thanks for your replies! I'll see if I can get him on here, although he's not a fan of computers let alone forums - but I know he needs support. He is adamant he doesn't need anyone else and gets a glazed look in his eye when I talk about seeing the Dr or nurse or even the pharmacist!!
Anywayz - I'll keep reading and relaying wot goes on here and maybe it'll help!!
It's all taking my mind off eating too - bonus!!! :rotfl:
Good luck for the weekend everyone!!0 -

Good luck with helping your OH. My OH made me an appointment to see the nurse about getting champix - he and my sister used it last year. I didn't really want to stop, or at least part of me didn't - but I am 16 days smoke free now. I haven't found is as easy as some.
Try to talk to him without sounding as though you are nagging. Say you heard someone talking about it at work/a friend/ whatever see if he gets interested.
Nothing worse as a smoker than being nagged, it makes us oooops, themwant to smoke more.

My DH stopped smoking on Tue evening so this is day 3. His systems are unable to do anything with fingers, funny feeling in fingers, body ache badly, light headed plus short temped and snacking all the time. More worrying he seems afraid that these aren’t normal? He just stopped not taking anything, he doesn’t want too because he stopped.
Are these normal? once he knows he may calm down a bit.Pay £7,500 in 2011 paid £29,325 No 43 OP £21,825

Dentonemma, hi and I think it's lovely that you are such supportive partner - that will help him sooooooooo much. Yes, feeling abnormal - unfortunately - is totally normal. All the things he is feeling are what 99% of us have been going or are going through, especially in the first week of stopping. Be prepared for him maybe being a bit grumpy and bad-tempered too and try to remember it's not you or anything you've done!!!
The bad feelings will go with time - honest.
Have a read through the last few pages of the thread, and you'll get a good idea of what to expect and ways you might be able to help.........and the very best of luck
Choille buddy, the day is almost over but Many Happy Returns  and I hope you've had a lovely day. Your first smoke-free birthday in 30 years - now there is something worth celebrating. Well done :j:j:j:j:j0 -
Thanks haloona.
I don't mind the grumpy DH, I know what to expect on that front. A friend came around on Wed evening for about 1/2 hour then Thur she phone me up to check me and the kids were still alive. The kid did make him a well done stop smoking card each. The only thing is he is away tonight maybe a couple of days on his own; this is making it a lot worse for him. He went to bed a 9.30pm because he couldn’t cope any more.
At this point I should add this I sort of smoke. I'm the person smokes hate. I can smoke or not smoke. E.g. brought a pack last Friday finished Sunday or Monday not had one since and no withdrawn systems. I only smoke when its school holidays or going out or someone coming over. As my DH has stopped I will never smoke in front of him and I will probably never buy a packet again I will just nick of a mate the odd one or two a month. Money saved to buy something for DH. This may of come to an head as today we updated our wills at bit scare about dying.Pay £7,500 in 2011 paid £29,325 No 43 OP £21,825
