I'll keep this brief but after smoking since I was 10 years old and numerous attempts to quit later, I am finally about to quit for good. The quit nurse finally rang me back last week and I have my first appointment with her on wednesday - and I'm sooooo relieved!!

I've only read the first page of this thread and can identify with so many of the reasons to quit given in the first post - I'll go back and read more fully later as I'm certain there are plenty of tips along the way.

Amongst my reasons I'm sick of the habit, can't stand the smell and primarily, I want to quit because of my health. (I've a combination of health issues already which smoking aggravates.) My reasons are entirely "selfish" this time (just about me, if you know what I mean?!) and I've plenty of incentives that should help keep me going through withdrawal/cravings periods.

The actual quit date will be as soon as the quit nurse will let me and next monday seems an ideal day to me right now. can't wait to get started!!

Welcome aboard. You have stated many of the reasons we have all given. Smoking cessation seems to be more successful than going it alone and there is plenty of help there, remember if at first you don't succeed, keep trying until u find the product that's right for you. There is plenty of support here for you, we're all routing for you !!!!

I am ashamed to say i had a few cigs at the weekend, bad time with the (x) OH, not making excuses, it's my own fault, but am back off them today, and am on NRT from smoking cessation group, really annoyed with myself as I had beaten the habit. As I'm allergic to something in the patches, I have opted for the nasal spray as it's an instant hit of nicotine. So fingers crossed this time....

Mazza it's like falling off a bike, you just have to get back on.

I have fallen off so many times its ridiculous! Anyway I am on now and was reading Allen Carr's Easy Way for Women just to remind myself when I get a Nicknag or a J1 (Just one....) whisper.

I am finding it a bit poignant and scary that this man was so positive about quitting and had many many happy years till lung cancer claimed him.

I also think its true what he says, that how ever many excuses we come up with as to why we "like" or need to smoke, the truth is we would never encourage a young person to take it up.......we would all say NO.......DON'T TOUCH IT UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE ENSLAVED BY IT.

God bless us, everyone of us.:D

  • Don't worry Mazza, you just keep trying and going. You are doing so well just keep your head up. As long as you stay thinking positive you will always try :)

Bloody hell have any of u tried that nasal spray? it's revolting!!!! Feel like such a prat for smoking at weekend now. Just know if me n him had to stop fighting things would be a lot easier. If I could just control my temper.

Hi all, very inspirational thread, well done. Today is my first day without smoking - I started the tablets a week ago, was allowed to smoke for the first week, tho I did cut down. But I hopefully smoked my last cig last night. I'm a bit worried about doubling the dose of Champix as of tomorrow after reading all the scary side effects - in fact I am half tempted to stop taking it at all. I've had a splitting headache all day today and wonder if that is a side effect..... though a whole bottle wine has probably added to that!!

    Hi All,
Thought I would join this thread as a bit of encouragement to myself. I'm just coming up to 72 hours 'clean', having smoked my last one (as planned) on Friday evening. Nothing too difficult so far, except for one mega-craving a couple of hours back which had me in its grip for a few long minutes!

No complacency here, I know this is going to be tough to stick with. I did four weeks earlier in the year before succumbing to the "I can just have one for a treat" lunacy. I then managed several short give-ups of a few days, but nothing that stuck. So decided to smoke for a while, gather my willpower, and start again. This thread has made useful reading, and I have also found whyquit.org a very motivating read.

Good luck to you all and :T to anyone that has overcome this habit.

    Welcome newbies,

gromit, go with the flow with the Champix, some people have no side effects whatsoever with them, I didn't have any side effects until i was on them 6 weeks, then it was the major ones :o but i would still recommend them to people, as they do work. Combine it with lots of apples and water when you have the cravings. If you do get any of the severe side effects, call your doctor for advice.

bms are you using anything to help you quit? NRT/Champix/Cold Turkey.

Like Bluedog I have my first appointment with the Smoking Cessation Clinic in the next couple of weeks - Thursday 6th June

I've managed to give up before for a year, but had that 1 daft ciggy, and back on the wagon.

Think I smoke more now than I ever did but finally managed to get a cessation appointment at night, which wasn't easy

Being the only smoker in the house, I would prefer a class as you meet some people going through the same thing. However thought I'd post on here in case I feel the need for occasional letting off of steam!

Few insprirational stories on here so fingers crossed it works out this time :o
