What a great thread, i cannot believe that there are other people out there that do this!
May I join please? I love knitting squares whilst i watch the telly in the evenings, and am just about to send off approximately 100 squares to a charity that collects squares to make into blankets for little african HIV orphans.
Will count up how many i have knitted this year and can those be counted in the totals?
Thanks

Rosepink1984 - welcome to you, glad to have you aboard! yes, the knots just become part of the rug. I'm going to give it a go because I really hate throwing the bits of wool away - it always seems such a waste. I'm just knotting the bits together and rolling them into one big ball. When it looks like a decent size, I shall start knitting from it. It should be an interesting project because it will be all different colours! As for knitting baby things, there are some links in the very first post on this thread for very easy patterns for hats and other things. The buntings are very easy - Preemies UK take those and they're not much more complicated than doing squares. Here is the link http://www.touchinglittlelives.org/knitbunting.html Sadly, they are used for babies who don't survive but they are much needed and bring comfort to the parents. They are very tiny, which came as a shock when I made the first one, but they really do help.
Dpixie - of course you can join us; we love newbies to our thread. Would you mind letting us know the name of the charity where you send your squares? It sounds like a very worthy cause. Also, please do count your squares so far this year and I'll add them when I update our running totals. Thanks.

Hi,
I really liked your article and would love to get involved with knitting some of these items (more straightforward items as I have not knitted for quite a while now)
Can you let me have further details of what i need to do to get involved with this project.
Many thanks

Hi Chrisalabella - welcome to you! Have a look at the post on page one of this thread, the very first post, and all the details are there, such as addresses for sending knitted items, links to patterns and tutorials. There's lots of info there to get you started.
If any newbies have questions or are unsure about anything, please feel free to post questions on here. There will always be someone along with an answer! Don't forget to post when you have knitted things so that they can be added to our updates!
It's lovely to have so many newbies joining us - a big welcome to all of you. You'll like it here!

Hi Kathy,
Can you update me with 2 BABY HATS and 1 BUNTING please.
I started the moss stitch preemie baby cardi last night, it looks so cute but it is sooooo tiny.
I have just read the bit about the rug, I will have a go at that too. Think I will try a crochet one, just to see what it would look like.
Looks like there will be some really "interesting" rugs lying around by the end of the year :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
It's really nice to see so many new members posting WELCOME TO YOU ALL :T :T :T

Hi Anne - thanks for your update. I'll add it a bit later on. Perhaps we've started a new trend in 'interesting' rugs! We'll have to choose a name for them!

Firstly I would like to say what a wonderful thread this is and the work that everyone is doing is wonderful and so touching. You are all angels.xxx
I decided towards the end of last year to start knitting again (my nan taught me as a child) and starting simply I knitted scarves for my sister-in-law and my best friend for Christmas which I must say I was very proud of.
Now that my practice ones were a success I would love to join you in this 2009 project. I am going to check out the links on the first page and get some simple patterns to get started.
Also can you let me know where you all purchase your wool from? I have been buying mine from Hobbycraft but I am not sure if there is anywhere else that may be cheaper. My mantra is "Never pay full price!"0
