I'm doing granny squares at the mo. All in one colour because I just did one to see if I could finally get the hang of it and it's not bad (not even close to attic 24 though!) so will do some more in different colours and make a blanket. They are quite large so not much sewing needed.

I couldn`t crochet until I followed the instructions on attic24`s blog for her summer garden granny squares - honestly Mag & Alana on LH will confirm this. I got the hang of it and did a small pet blanket for the last challenge, then progressed to trying a larger pink & white one, then a blue and white one which all went to LH. I just started a pink and white one for friend`s new granddaughter and it`s coming on a treat. Will MAYBE try something different one of these days when I`m feeling brave.

Well braved the wool shop today and guess what - didn`t spend a penny !!!:T My mission was to buy silvery white yarn to do DGD`s pillows as I was told in no uncertain terms that silver-grey just would NOT be right. When I asked lady in wool shop if she had any nice silver yarn, possibly fluffy, she handed me a ball of quite nice funky fur type stuff - didn`t half give me a funny look when I said sorry that`s no use it`s grey not silver. Says it`s called silver on the band, says she in a very miffed tone, so had to explain it had to be proper sparkly silver or even white with sparkly silver through it. Gave me a very queer look as I left empty handed

Had a look at Kemps on the off chance and what do you think - on the last page of their clearance wools there is zanzibar and the very last one has silvery bits, looks a bit grey as well but if I mix it with white it might be OK. I`ll have another scout round some of the other site before I order it though just in case there`s something better out there.

BTW I didn`t come home empty handed - there`s a Nickel`n`dime shop further along the street so popped in there - and just as I was passing the stand 5 balls of wool jumped into my arms. Well, I couldn`t put them back as the poor things were obviously desperate to leave the shop - maybe the rest of the wool was bullying them  so I took pity on them and took them home. They seem to be getting along fine with the rest of my colourful friends.;)

Waffled so much that I need a cuppa.
Hope you`ve all had a good day and that the weather is kinder to us all tomorrow.

I know it`s not very OS or moneysaving, but do any of you regularly buy / subscribe to any of the knitting magazines. I`ve been having a look locally but can`t seem to find many to compare. Anyone recommend any ? I know there are squillions of free patterns on the Net but I like to have a magazine now and again if I have some pennies -sorry that should be ££££`s - to spare. They really are expensive some of them aren`t they. Mind you I treated the grandkids to a comic each on Friday and almost fell over when the assistant told me the price - £ 5.50 for two comics
Went to the library today so having an early night with a book.
    Nightie night,see you tomorrow.

Hi Elaine - I've had a look today at Knitter which is lovely - a great mag with loads of great articles and a lot of patterns I've bought a copy before and treasure it - I think its one of the best on the market £6 but you can have a look see before you buy as it doesn't come wrapped in plastic!! They sell it in Morrisons so probably do so in Tescos.

I am still on severe restrictions with mags etc so put it back on the shelf , mainly because I've just spent £40 at Kemps - hey ho!:rotfl:

    Hi everyone.

Talking about magazines, I did buy some copies of Let's Knit which started last year, at £4.99 (!), with the dreaded plastic wrapping on it. At least the first few had freebies with them. The magazines are really good but they are all so expensive these days, aren't they? At least over here I'm not so tempted as they're in French! Don't forget, though, that most of the magazines offer discounts if you subscribe, so, if you find one you like, it would be cheaper that way, and you would get them delivered to your door.

K2tog - with the IS hats, I just use the same wool and a hook a couple of sizes narrower than the knitting needles used. For baby hats there are a lot of patterns on Bev's Country Cottage - http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/preemies.html#p-hats - for crochet preemie hats that don't need sewing up because you join the rounds as you go! Last year I made a couple of smaller versions for IS hats. We all hate sewing up, don't we?!

I've just caught up with Attic24's blog, which is great. She obviously takes great joy in her home and family and is very inspirational. Her house looks lovely and very welcoming; I get the impression you could just turn up on her doorstep and she would sit you down with one of her gorgeous blankets on your lap and a lovely cuppa!

Elaine - it's funny how wool jumps into your arms like that, isn't it? I'm glad I'm not the only one that happens to! I know what you mean about comics, too. I'm sure they don't have to be so expensive - they used to be a great way of treating the children when money was short.

Believe it or not, I had just about enough wool to complete the two sleeves to the baby's cardie. I knitted them both at the same time which helped me to judge how the wool was being used up. Is it just me, or does anyone else knit faster when they think they are running out of wool?!:rotfl:

Talking about books being read at the moment, I'm reading A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth. It's one of the longest novels ever written (I love long books!) at 1488 pages, and set in post-partition India. It's fictional but has a lot of the history of India since independence, and I am really enjoying it, although I don't get much time to read these days - well, I would if I wasn't knitting and surfing on here so much! I usually devour books about China and its history, but I have finished all the ones I brought with me. Besides buying lots of new wool when I come back to the UK, another shopping spree will be ransacking the charity shops for some more books to bring back here.

Well, I'd better go and jump in the shower. Today I shall work all morning ( ) and knit all afternoon (:j) - well, that's the plan!

morning everyone - glad that you liked attic24's blog - i get the updates whenever she does them and really enjoy what she does, i think she is inspriational. i love her crochet (although i dont think she does enough) and agree that her home looks terribly welcoming.

elaine- what a lovely kind person you are - all those balls of wool that were being bullied and you saved them, perhaps you should start a new charity - the prevention of cruelty to wool society? i think i would sign up, on the condition that you wrote more funny e-mails just like that one! with regards the knitting magazines, i have noticed (as i was looking for crochet magazines) that tescos stocks at least 4, waitrose stocks 2 and wh smiths also has about 4. wh smiths told me i should come in and look every 2 weeks as they are published at different times, so it would be a good idea, to go in and have a look at the beginning of the month so that you could see what is available. if not, wh smiths customer services are excellent, having eventually called them regarding the crochet magazines. Lastly Elaine, do try attic24's ripple pattern, if you have not already, it is easy and i think is very effective.

chalkey - i know that attic24 uses great materials, but i think it is the finished product that people look at and yours look no different, so i think you should go for it, you are clearly very talented.

all this talk about sewing up IS hats is making me feel a little guilty - i have about 15 that need to be sewn up and then added to my totals, oh dear, maybe thats a job for this afternoon, or maybe not, that oxfam jumper (done in adult size) is nearly half way and really needs to be finished some time.

oh well, i think that as it is warm outside and the sun is shining i will go and do a spot of weed removing from the veggie garden - before it becomes removing veggies from the weed garden!

have a bright, sunny, warm and loving day everyone

Mrs Moneypenny - I've just googled the title of your book and, apparently, it's being made into a film starring Julia Roberts, which will be released in 2010! I shall definitely look out for the book - it sounds intriguing!

DPixie and Chalky - I find a lot of the cheaper wools are just as good as the more expensive makes, and it makes me wonder why the big names charge so much for theirs. I've been disappointed with some cheaper ones but then, last year I paid nearly £4 each for two balls of one of the Sirdar ones, to make a Christmas gift, and I was just as disappointed with that. Nowadays, I just go on the feel of the wool and how close the ply is, IYSWIM. As you say, DPixie, it's the finished article that counts.

Well, I've been quite busy so far; I've made some bread, cleared away the breakfast things, made the bed, cleaned the bathroom, put the washing on the line, washed down all my kitchen worktops and cupboards, prepped for dinner, and tidied up the sitting room. I am going to force myself to work for the next two to three hours (well, I will need coffee breaks, of course!), and then I can really take the afternoon off.

morning all. Elaine you did make me laugh with the story of the wool, cos I do the same thing. The problem with knitting magazines is that having spent so much I never want to throw them out, so the pile gets as big as the ironing.

chalky your squares are lovely, I have a few more ideas going round my head now.

Re knitting faster when you're nearly out of wool. If I have music on while I'm knitting I knit to the beat. Must not play Bat Out of Hell.
