Ann, I know exactly what you mean. I think Elaine is in all of our minds right now. It's such a shame we can't support her in person, isn't it? I can't get over how routine her DH's medical problem seemed to be, from what she said in her posts, but things just took a turn for the worst with the worst possible outcome. I should imagine she's in shock as well as grief.

I shall update some time next week. As you say, it doesn't seem right to post about anything else right now.

    Take care.

Elaine - if you are reading this, all your friends here are thinking about you, and sending love and hugs. We're here for you when you feel able to post - please don't feel you can only post about knitting; if we can help in any way, we'll be glad to.

I woke about an hour ago and lay thinking about Elaine and her family. I think we have all felt very saddened by the death of Jim.It is obvious from the posts on here that we are all feel unable to do what we do best, at such a side time, talk about knitting. I think because we have established such a wonderfully supportive group and share so much about our lives the result is of course at times like this some of our posting may seem trivial and unimportant.

One of my earliest memories of my time on this forum is of peoples response to a lady called Smokeybabe and a similar situation with her husband. I was incredibly touched by the kindness shown and the general feeling that everyone wanted to do something practical to help.

A while back I posted about wanting to put my arms through the computer and give people suffering a virtual hug. I actually feel like that now of course most especially to Elaine and her family at this time . Their sadness has touched us all. But I also feel from the posts here since Jim's death that we are all feeling very sad and maybe we need to do something practical to give us a focus. A quiet joining of strength to make something good happen at such a difficult time. I do now how amazing the people on this forum can be after the response to my appeal for the Spanish childrens home

So I thought of this. I have been making squares ( lets go back to our roots) using a pattern from Project Linus
It is called blankets without sewing
    http://projectlinusuk.org.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id+=34&item.

They are interesting to do and give a lovely result.

If anyone wants to join in we could all make 1 square and I am quite happy if you want to send your finished square to me and I will sew the squares together and send the blanket to Lou at Loving Hands for it to be used for the charity of her choice or maybe if Elaine feels strong enough she may like to choose a charity for the blanket to go to.

In practical terms making a larger square helps with the task of sewing the squares together . The finished square measures 15 inches, and will also mean we will quickly see a result for our efforts which I think will help us all feel we are doing 1 very small thing to help . I will of course post photos as we progress. If you want to knit or crochet a different pattern that would be fine. I know some people love the dishcloth patterns, we can just use the same dimensions of 15 inches per square.

Right. I am off back to bed. Please feel free to give opinions and ideas, this is for us all. Please only join if you want, as I know everyone feels different at times and this is only the beginning of an idea not a final projrct.

I will pop back on at my more usual time and talk about the practicalities especially my return to Spain in October but until then thinking of you all.
    Linda

Sorry I am useless at links -- that 1 doesnt take you to the Blankets without sewing pattern but I will find it later or some kind person will pop it on. There are some photos of the squares on 1 of my earlier posts.
