lcwilson - sorry to bother you just two questions on the cribs -

    1) Do you need to sew the hood to the base (so to speak) - obviously round the top edge - does it need some kind of stiffning or does it just stay up on its own ?

    2) What/how do you knit your decorative edging - im no good at sewing lace on - so wondered if you could help with a pattern ?

Sorry for being a pain - its coming on really well (am glad I have done the long edges though ha ha) - although I am not pleased with the colour - I used like a soft colour rainbow varigated - so I am now planning my second !

Will pop back in later to speak to all of you and catch up
    hugs - jaqui xx

Hi jaqui, glad you're getting on so well with it.

First question - No, I don't sew the hood to the body at all. I start by putting the main inside/outside in place, and the hood next. Adjust the ribbons so you get a nice shape. Next put in the matress - this holds the hood in place nicely and means pieces can be sent to Shelley very easily. Finally, put in the pillow and blanket, and adjust the ribbons around the outside ruffle.

I honestly thought I would have to use stiffener, but thankfully not :T.

As to the fancy edging. Start off by placing the two pieces with both right sides to the outside, and over-sew them together around the top with a very light tacking stitch (just every couple of inches to hold them very loosely in place). This makes it much easier to crochet/knit through, and that is what is actually going to join them.

I've only used crochet and only know a couple of stitches of that, so this is the one I used. It's called double crochet, but I learned in on you tube and think it's the US version, so I'll explain it as best as I can:

Yarn around hook, hook through work, wool around hook and pull through, wool around hook and pull through first 2 stitches, wool around hook and pull through final 2 stitches.

    Here's a you tube link:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgA9KSJrgAc&annotation_id=annotation_415811&feature=iv

    And one for slip stitch:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJE1UTuUjxM

Now you know how to do that, commence edging as follows:

Join coloured woool to edge of work with a slip stitch. Do 3 double crochet into next stitch (all 3 into the same stitch, and making sure to go through both layers of work). Miss a stitch or two, then slip stitch into next one. Continue all the way around doing 3 double, 1 slip.

Well there now, I've waffled on quite nicely as usual, so I hope you can make head or tail of this :rotfl:

Hi everyone - just about to post the update. Loads of items to add, thanks to all of you. The numbers continue to amaze me! Didn't get to do any knitting last night - we thought our neighbours were coming back from holiday yesterday, so left their pets for most of the day . By the evening there was no sign of them, so we went over to feed the animals, finally got the lead onto the overexcited dog, then the neighbours turned up - we couldn't take the lead back off because the dog was obviously looking forward to his walk, so we took him out, then came back and had the inevitable drink with the neighbours! At least now they're back, I know we won't have to do any more strolling round the countryside for a while!

I've sorted out my oddments of wool and will try and use them all up on small things. I'd love to start a crib, but I still need to finish the ripple blanket for my grandchild-to-be and that's taking longer to do because it's getting heavier by the row! I'm so pleased with the pattern, though, and know my DIL2 will be pleased with it. Anyway, I shall do some buntings and hats in between the blanket. Doing something small makes a change!

Thanks for all your wonderful items. Will do the update now, in another post.

Have a great bank holiday - hope the weather is good for you all. It's lovely here - already 26 degrees!

Pippa - your post crossed with mine. Like you, I prefer crochet because it's easier on the tendonitis in my hands. I can't knit comfortably with long needles any more; DH has cut a few of my wooden ones down for me to an easier length, but he hasn't got round to doing the ones I use the most! I shall have to nag him a bit more -when he's finished the bathroom! I love the way crochet grows so quickly but, as you say, blankets get heavier and heavier as you progress! I'm making mine four rows to a stripe, white, blue, white, yellow, white, pink - the colours are fine, but the white wool is from a massive ball of wool (think it was 500gms) and that's heavy too, so the yarn doesn't run smoothly from it! I usually start a ball from the inside bccause it flows well that way, but I couldn't find the end in the white ball! Anyway, it's definitely a labour of love! I'll post a photo when it's finished.

My Mum is fine, thanks for asking, just a bit stressed because she's in the middle of moving house and county! She's lived in Wiltshire for the last seven years but has decided to go back to our home town (sunny Weston-super-Mud in Somerset) - she moves on Wednesday. My sister and BIL have been helping her, but, as she lives on her own (my Dad died forty years ago, sadly), packing is so much harder. I wish I could be there to help her, too. Anyway, she's longing to get back into knitting, when she's settled. Moving back to W-s-M will be good for her because she'll be closer to family there.

Your caravan sounds good - Paignton is lovely, so I'm sure you'll have some great holidays there. Good luck getting to know the caravan - we had a motorhome, which we used to tour France looking for property, and keeping that going was a real learning curve! We were complete novices, too, so had a few challenges! Hope it goes well!

Maytaurus - thanks for the (((hugs))) for my Mum. I lost my Dad when I was 16. I'm the eldest of four, the youngest was only 8. He and my Mum were both 38 when he died. It's only as I've got older that I realise just how young he was. My DS1 will be 38 this year - it really brings it home to me how much my Dad was denied. He was a lovely father and, despite his terminal illness (and my Mum's battle with TB), we had the most wonderful childhood. We didn't have him for long, but I feel very lucky that he was our Dad. My Mum has battled through life without him, against many odds and tragedies, and I only wish I was half as good, brave and gutsy as her. I'm thrilled that she will be near my sister again. She actually moved to Wiltshire on a whim, literally putting a pin on the map - she said a 'heavenly wind' blew her there! It did her good to have a break from W-s-M and the memories she had, but now her 'heavenly wind' is blowing her back there and we all know it's the right decision.

I must admit, I do more crochet now than anything, although there are lots of knitting patterns I want to do - LC Wilson's amazing cribs, for a start. But, for now, I'll stick to the crochet, because it's quick and easy. I work online, and it's years and years of typing that has given me tendonitis, but I still think if I stopped typing, knitting and crochet, my hands would be worse. I hate having idle hands!

Well, enough from me. We've just had a thunderstorm after a humid afternoon, followed by a beautiful rainbow, and now the sun is shining in a bright blue cloudless sky - the weather can change just like that! Off to check on my tomato plants, then settle down to some crochet.

Morning all, hope that you are all well and happy, and if not, hugs all round. i am starting to gather together all my scraps of wool in order to start my 5th item on the go at the moment - my 17" square pet blanket for LH. I think i saw that that was an acceptable size on one of the posts, can anyone confirm that this is not too small?

Have a wonderful day all and happy knitting/crocheting to everyone who can and to those who are not up to it today, i will knit a couple of rows for each of you!

a warm smile to all of you
