Yes they are meant to be that small you be surprise how much they are used in hospitals. buntings are so quick and easy to do.
What has everyone got on their needles at the moment,
i am doing a easter chick
You may notice that i have got a money total in my sig as i am putting money in jar after every item i knit
eg ted & boobs are worth 50p each, chick & stockings 10p each, baby items 20p each
all money i get when i am knitting goes to posting a parcel to a hospitalKnitting for premature babies and babies that are born to soon :T
TOTAL: 4 SANDS BLANKET, 18 CROCHETED BLANKETS, 4 GOWNS, 2 SLEEPING BAG (PRIVATE REQUEST), 1 BIB, 8 BOOBS, 3 CARDIES, 9 VENTS, 3 KNITTED BLANKETS, 1 PAIR OF BOOTIES, 1 HAT,0 -
Thanks for that Shezmit. I will do more now I know I haven't done it all wrong as they are easy enough for a knitting simpleton like myself to do! Do you bear all the cost of postage to the hospitals? It must cost quite a lot.
Trying to teach my son to knit who seems to like the idea of it more than the actual learning - any suggestions anyone? Also working on DH who (he tells me) used to be very handy with a sewing machine, but this will take time!Anyone else converted friends and family?0 -
i was at the start paying the most of the postage costs to the hospitals with the parcels but now i am trying with some fundraising as each parcels cost £3.21 to send which is alot when you have 100 hospitals, But i enjoy what i do and if it helps the hospitals i will do as much as i can

Hi Maytaurus. There's loads going on here, isn't there? Thanks for the link to making pompoms! I've just read your brilliant tutorial on the Knitter's Thread and have posted on there asking if I can copy and paste it on to here? I think if it was in the very first post, it would encourage people who find us here and want to join in. You've explained it very well without using any confusing jargon!

of course you can :A
my mind boggles when I think of all the updating you may end up having to do this year ! :rotfl:The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane — Marcus Aurelius0 -
Hi all. Shazrobo - so sorry you are not feeling so good. Depression is a dreadful thing - I hope you feel better soon. Please don't worry about the knitting. The time has to be right, doesn't it? 13 year old twin boys must be a handful! I have two boys (they're grown up now); they were born ten years apart and that was hard work in itself. Well done on teaching them to knit; I taught both mine - they've not kept it up but they haven't forgotten how to. They were easier to teach than my DGD6YO is proving!
Shez - I like your idea of putting money away for postage costs. It's a shame the Royal Mail don't allow us reduced costs for charity posting or even free, as they do for the Forces when overseas. We would all much rather spend the money on wool than postage, wouldn't we?
Maytaurus - thanks for that. I shall copy and paste it tomorrow when I update. I agree with you, the updating is going to be quite phenomenal this year, I think! This is why I've decided to update first thing in the mornings from now on. I usually get up early - as you know, because you do, too! - and I can usually guarantee a quiet hour or two to myself without interruption. I make a note whenever anyone adds items and hope that this makes me more efficient and less prone to getting the numbers wrong!
K2tog - thanks for those lovely words. I'm so pleased you are enjoying it here.
I pm'd our great leader, Martin, this morning, to thank him for making our thread 'Thread of the Week' in his weekly email last week, and I was thrilled to get a pm back saying that he was glad to help.
Well, I was going to do some sewing-up but I was asked to do a rush job at very short notice - deadline first thing tomorrow morning! - so I've just finished that and will sit and do some sewing for an hour after a nice bath. I have tried to keep tomorrow free for knitting and sewing so, fingers crossed.
Have a great evening and I'll be back to update in the morning.
Thanks to you all for all you are doing. It wouldn't be possible without you!

Hi everyone.
I just wanted to tell you all about my situation and then explain this post. My OH retired in 2007 and we now spens about half the year (the cold half !!! ) in Spain. I have been knitting a lot for Loving Hands and a little for Premiess UK.
I went back tp Yoga class this morning after the Christmas Break and before Christmas the lovely lady who runs the class asked for some presents for the Orphanage in our nesrby town. I sent a sock monkey. I asked whether the presents had been well received this morning and she said they had. She then went on to say that a new baby had come to the home and they had no baby clothes whatsoever. Well of course I thought how sad it was and have already got my needles clicking but I was wondering if any of you kind souls could help with a little donation of a knitted item. Apparently the orphanage is not funded and relies on donations and even though they are desperate for baby clothes other knitted items would also be very welcome.
Kathy I in no way want to hijack this wonderful thread and all the other wonderful causes we all knit for but if anyone would like to help you could pm me and I could give you my sister in laws address in the UK as she is coming out to see me in 3 weeks and she could bring anything with her. If anyone needs help with the postage I would willingly send a cheque or refund your postage via Paypal
Thank you for reading this post and best wishes to you all

Hi all - I've just had my second cuppa of the day so I think my brain has woken up enough to update. It's amazing how many things are being added - it's only two weeks into January and the totals look fantastic!
Shez - both your first two teds are now sewn up and stuffed! I shall do a batch of chicks today and get them off in the post to you later on this afternoon.
I have done some mittens and started a little cardi for Chalky's appeal, so I hope to get them posted today or tomorrow.
I shall update now and then, thanks to you, Maytaurus, I shall copy and paste your excellent knitting tutorial onto the very first post for newbies who want to learn to knit. I shall also post it on here, too.
I hope you all have a great day - I am hoping to get more done today because I've tried to keep the day free!

Hi, it's me again. Here is Maytaurus's excellent learning-to-knit tutorial, written in jargon-free easy-to-follow instructions! Ive copied and pasted it on to the very first post, too. Thanks, Maytaurus!
MAYTAURUS'S LEARN-TO-KNIT TUTORIAL:
Cast on40 stitches
Begin by tying a slip knot in the yarn. ... the slip knot will be your first stitch.
Step 1 - Hold the wool out in front of you and twist to form a loop.
Step 2 - Reach through the loop, grasp the dangling right end by the middle, and pull it through the loop, being careful not to let the end come through.
Keep your left hand steady, and a knot will tight around the part you are pulling through.
Step 3 - You can now hook the new loop around things (like your thumb or a needle!),
Pull the main length of the wool to tighten around them.
You make the stitch the same way, but instead of placing the left hand stitch onto the right needle, you slip the right hand stitch right off. That way you'll always have forty stitches (for example, after your first stitch, you'll have thirty nine on the left needle and one on the right). Continue this way until you've completed a row, then turn it around and do the same thing all over again. Keep knitting until you have a square that measures 8 inches all the way around.
Then cast off....
Knit two stitches as you normally would. Then take the first stitch, the one furthest from the end, and lift it over the second stitch, sliding it right off the needle. Knit another stitch and repeat until only one stitch remains. Cut your yarn and pass the tail through your last remaining stitch, pulling it tight.
You've now made an 8 X 8 square!
