Slightly less fresh bread is easier to cut.
I used my bread maker is 'in store'. The only nice result was fruit bread, white bread being too heavy and the hole made by the blade spoiled too many slices.0 -
Like OP I could only doorstops, so I bought an electric knife, only a chepo on, under a tenner and us it for slicing my loaves
The thing with electric knife the do the work and one is not sawing away with fresh bad, hold the still & let it's blades & weight do the job
My daughter bought a sort of slice guide, so she just slices down following the guides, not sure where she got it, but she is a big Lakeland fan
Have a Google for bread slicing guide, I just did, seems there are loadsEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -

Unlike Fruball, I think I was probably somewhere into my second year of ownership before I could claim to have mastered it to my satisfaction. And we still have a "duck bag" where I put the slightly over ambitious attempts for OH to take down to the canalBut I got there in the end with practice
For some reason, whereas I could never cut the unsliced bread we used to buy from the SM before I got my panny but OH was fine with it, now he is the one who can't seem to master slicing bread (2 years later!). Somehow the top of the loaf looks like screwed up newspaper and/or the face gets carved like Mt Rushmore :rotfl:I've found he's best with the softer crusts - rapid loaf is best but the sandwich option is second choice if I'm doing a timed over-nighter. I guess it just tells you who makes most of the sandwiches and toast in our relationship0 -

We got a bread maker a few days ago - so far I've produced one loaf, and was very pleased with it.
But the slicing will need practice. I was producing either door steps or shavings !
I don't think my left handedness helps either
I've got a bread knife which I've had for years, a Prestige. It has quite big serrations on the blade
I'm going to practice but I'm thinking of one of the following options
1) a new bread knife - with smaller serrations
2) Use our electic knife
3) Get a bread slicing guide like the Lakeland Evenslice
4) Get a food slicer, like the Kenwood.
It seems the bread maker is only half the story ..... slicing is important tooEarly retired - 18th December 2014

Today, as teddysmum said, I have found that yesterdays bread was easier to cut! So that looks like the way forward.
I've looked at reviews for the different bread slice guides and none really seem to have great reviews. None I want to waste any money on anyway. Much as I love Lakeland stuff their one has awful reviews. They don't seem to sell as much bread related stuff as they once did.0 -

I must admit I don't really want to shell out more money to produce slices. It's Mr GG that is the one who would like the Lakeland Evenslice thing..... To me it looks a bit awkward to use - as a leftie I think I'd be really cack-handed with it!
We are going to attempt a French stick on Saturday, so not too much slicing will be needed, then I'll do another loaf on Sunday, I will persevere with my trusty old knife.Early retired - 18th December 2014

I'm still rubbish at slicing and I'm now debating a left handed bread knife to compliment my Evenslice. Does of the left hand gang own a left-handed knife and what are your thoughts please?0 -
I've just realised... I never thought of it before, well not bread wise, but I'm mostly right handed but use my left for cutting, undoing bottles, pouring the kettle etc, so maybe I'll try being a leftie for bread0
