Best way to slice bread

I find it much easier to slice if I leave it overnight, so that's what I do if I want to have sliced bread in the freezer. However, like downshifter and LJM I think there's nothing to beat thickly sliced fresh bread with lashings of butter! Which probablty explains my weight gain!Resolution:

I find my electric knife works better on homemade bread0

Hi Moutard:hello:
Plenty of others have the same problem. There is a thread which discusses it here - best way to slice bread. You should also get plenty of ideas in there
I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together
thanks:)

Hi there,
I'm sorry if this has been asked a million times - or i'm just being stupid!! I have borrowed a breadmaker ( long term loan) and made some fab bread over the weekend. The problem is that I can't use it for sandwiches for me and my OH as I can't slice it thin enough - only Giant wedges. Is there any advice on this - I've tried slicing it warm and cold and just can't do thin slices without it squashing and breaking.
I'm really keen to make bread regulary and have bought all the stuff now so it would be great if someone could help me xxBaby due 4th May 2013

You need an electric carving knife - it makes the world of difference.0

We also use an electric carving knife, picked up a cheap one from the supermarket for about a fiver.
The other thing I've tried which seems to work (although I can't remember who told me about this!) is to run your breadknife under hot water and wipe dry before cutting the bread - I don't know how/why this works but it definitely does!Sometimes you have to go throughthe rain to get to therainbow0 -
I use a food slicer, that way you can vary the thickness of the slices but they are all uniform.
I got mine from Argos for about £30 ish and I'm really pleased with it - also sliced up my roast beef beautifully and made it go a lot furtherWhether you think you can or you can’t, you’re probably right ~ Henry Ford0 -
I have this problem with new bread. I find it easier to slice if it is a day old. It is still usable then0

Hi nomorespending,
I have an electric slicer which is great for slicing homemade bread but there are various knives that can be bought specially for cutting even slices. There's an earlier thread which has lots of tips and discusses the various options so I've added your thread to it to keep the replies together.
