  • I wonder if you fab MSE's can help me..

I have recenlty purchased a Panasonic Bread Maker and an positivly addicted to making bread... I can not believe how amazing it tastes and the smell is like heaven:A

My only niggle is ...... THE CRUMBS WHEN CUTTING

They go everywhere.. all over the board, the surfaces, the floor  (I'm not lazy and dont mind brushing up a few crumbs but the amount is ridiculous and its a major clear up operation for a piece of bread!!)

Am I just a messy bread cutter ?? :p or is there any other way of avoiding this?

I've had a quick look online about bread boards with grooves but didn't really want to fork out for a new board... unless I really have to.

  • When I've over-baked bread and the crust is too hard I soften it by wrapping the loaf up in a clean tea-towel until it's cooled.

An electric knife cuts cleaner and quicker. I find that i have a lot less crumbs when i use mine and i am also able to cut neater too.... though admittedly sometimes half the fun is having wonky shaped slices!.

I got my brother to bring a bread board back from Spain , I've actually never seen them like it here.. its a tray with a wooden insert of crisscross slattes, the crumbs mostly drop through the slattes into the tray below.. then of course I empty the tray of crumbs out for the birds..

I just googled slatted breadboards and found loads .. its like this...http://www.allianceonline.co.uk/chefs-utensils/chopping-boards/rectangular-wooden-bread-board-slatted-lwcbs005.html

  • I cut mine on the grillpan and the crumbs go down the slats and collect in the pan, no mess!

  • A large tea towel with a board on top, slice the bread, collect all the crumbs in the tea towel afterwards and feed to the birds.

Even put an open double page of a newspaper under the tea towel, if necessary.

My slices are just as wonky with an electric knife! I finally gave in and bought an electric food slicer. Now when I make bread I slice the whole loaf in one go and store in a greaseproof paper bag (HM), so only one lot of crumbs to sweep up! :D

I don't make bread, but when I cut bagettes I use a tea tray with high sides.
