was given this nugget of information on another forum... oh yes!!!

Do yourself a favour and check out O'Shea's {near Imperial Palace on the strip} they have a 16 hour "Happy Hour" on Saturday's with a midgit running on the bar pouring $1 shots, it's one of the last cheap drinks places in Vegas, you can still get a $1 beer in there, all the big casinos are now $8 a beer... and just incase you want a touch of home...The Crown and Anchor is on Tropicana just past the Thomas Mack center...they have all your British beers plus games from back home

Ratkarth - no not dead set on staying there - it's just it's my first time to vegas and first (long awaited) road trip so I'm a bit nervous about getting something sorted. Money is a bit tight but we would still like to stay somewhere nice.

I think Paris is a nice property - but depending on what you're looking for you might be just as happier somewhere else...maybe if you give an idea what's important to you in a hotel and perhaps what you're used to in terms of accomodation, folks here could help make suggestions? I really think it depends a lot on what people are used to...I doubt very much you would be disappointed in Paris, but it's quite possible somewhere else much less expensive would be perfectly nice for you and you'd save some money as well.

Not sure if someone's confused O'Shea's and Casino Royale (I've done it myself)...I know CR has $1 beers (Michelob bottles, not any beer you ask for)...I think O'Shea's has $2 draft beers (domestic)...perhaps they've added a new special...but most of the specials are for specific types of beer, not just anything...I mention it only so people won't be disappointed.

Other cheap beers can be had at Slots-a-Fun...and Ellis Island has their own microbrews which are really good and (I think) $1.50/pint.

and of course, if you are gambling, drinks are free with tip.

We love O'sheas, probably one of the quickest casinos to get drinks in when you get to the table!

Edit to say Ithink Ferf is right, pretty sure its $2 beers but I would have no idea as I always gamble in there and havent been to bar.

The cheap beers are $2.50 at O'Shea's. The $1 beers (Michelob) and Margaritas are at Casino Royale.

There is also a Crown and Anchor at Spring Mountain and Decatur. Both places charge an entrance fee when there is an important match on. $20 I believe.

This is the same Crown & Anchor that wanted to charge $20 EACH for us to get in and watch england v khazakstan while we were out there.

Told them what I thought of that then took a nice stroll back to the MGM Grand instead

PS - O'Shea's was alright in there, but was quite loud, didnt see the midget dude though. Did however see a 3ft elvis down near planet hollywood

thanks ferf - might try that but as I said above i am open to other hotels if there are better deals available and they are good - so i'll check out those sites.

malid - your itinery looks great! Hope you have a fab time too!
I have already booked a rim lodge for the grand canyon as a special treat for myself. We are going to have 3 full days in san fran - i'm guessing there will be lots to do and see! What did you think of the place in Bishop and the MGM?

    thanks again
We were in Bishop in 1990!! This was our first trip and we didn't pre book anything - just stopped off in different places and checked out the motels (our budget was for cheap but cheerful at that time). For the last 3 or 4 trips, we have booked hotels in advance (internet has been great for this and I still loo for a bargain and search for good deals and motels/hotels. Worth booking something you could cancel if needed. In 2007, we changed our plans because of thunderstorms in Sedona (unbelievable but there you go). We were able to cancel Sedona accommodation and book something else (we took a laptop with us and most motels had free wifi).

I can’t remember where we stayed in Bishop but I think it was a bit chilly having travelled from Las Vegas.

We haven’t stayed in the MGM before. On previous trips we have stayed in Excalibur – the accommodation is fine; good buffet but the ‘amusement’ area on the lower ground is a bit tired now. We’ve also stayed in Circus Circus – very noisy and busy, among the cheapest on The Strip. Kids enjoyed the attractions here including the circus acts. Wasn’t sure where to stay this time and reading all the different reviews and opinions was confusing. Opted for the MGM; a good pool will be great; not really there for the gambling which I know sounds crazy!

99c margaritas in Bills were very nice too and served as a great pre-breakfast drink

I've seen the O'Shea's midget any number of times...he seems a nice enough fellow. :)

We normally stop in there during the day when it's a bit more quiet than it can get in the evenings...I think the Beer Pong tables bring in a lot of younger, louder people especially in the evening...nothing against the younger, louder people of course!

O'Shea's is also handy for their little food court at the back if you want something quick and cheap...Burger King, Subway and a few other non-chain places...we don't eat a lot of fast food in Vegas as there are so many great options, but occasionally it serves the purpose very well.

We always forget about this...always go to CR for our $1 margarita fix...silly as we're across the street from Bill's...must remember this for next trip!
