  • i think this is a great idea so can i join too please?? after an accident i have over 4 years gone from a size 16 to a size 24 so i have 3 wardrobes and 5 trunks of clothes in sizes 14-24 and after trying loads on yesterday and finding nothing that fir was all set to go and buy more! but firstly i have no money for such things after hubby left me 2 months ago with thousands and thousands of pounds of debt, so need this more than ever. have fallen into a bad habit of replacing almost every item of clothing but in the next size up which is ridiculous. as now disabled only go out maybe once every 10-14 days and even on those days tend to stick jeans and top on yet was still buying fancy clothes that still have price on. tried selling new stuff on ebay with the thought that by the time i get down to that size i will either not like it or want it anymore. i am also adding handbags to ,ine as since i have stopped going out i am buying sometimes 3 or 4 bags a week. sold £35 top today on ebay for £1.99 so not feeling great but i guess if i dont sell some of it i wont be able to get into bedroom so count me in £85 plus my £1.99. am due to have gastric bypass later in year so hopefully by then i will be able to fit back into some of these clothes as cant bear to part with all of them even though work wear not really suitable for a hospital appointment at least it will make me make an effort that day all dressed up and might even put some lippy on another thing to add no cosmetics or toiletries (fancy stuff for me not stopping house stuff) wish me well will need it lol
  • Hi Lula Hula and all, could I please join?
So far this year I have spent £2.00 on a t-shirt which I love and have lived in for weeks now and £7.50 on yet another 'going out' top which I didn't need but liked the sparkly bits on! All other purchases were with Birthday money.

So I only have £90.50 left all year but I have more than enough clothes for going out, work etc. I know I just buy either because it's a 'bargain', or because I hope this will be the 'one' that makes me feel good about my size! It has to stop now! Am yet again going to try to lose the weight, if I do I will not need to buy new clothes as DH has said he will buy me a whole new wardrobe when I need it- even that hasn't been enough incentive till now. I feel inspired by all the comments and will succeed this time. No more wasting money on things I don't need.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned jumble sales yet- I love them. Choose the 'right' area and you can get real bargains. Last year I bought a Kaliko jumper with pearl trim for 20p and Next top still with price label on for 20p. Sometimes if you wait till near the end instead of 20p per item it becomes a black bin bag full for £1.

    Thanks for all the inspiration.

    Hi Lula
Nothing to report as I haven't spent anything. I just wanted to say thanks for starting such a good concept. I already do lots of shopping in charity shops, it's so much more fun than the High Street as you never know what you'll find!
We're off on holiday soon and I will be wearing the clothes I always take with me. After all, no-one I meet will have seen me wearing them before!
Good luck to all our gang. Happy (careful) shopping

  • such a fab idea, I don't know how to join. ?!
Are we going to do clothes swaps too?
Please do not confuse me with other gratefulsforhelp. x
  • A big thank you to Lula and everyone for this fab thread, there are some great tips and inspiration here. As a result of this thread I went through my wardrobe and was thoroughly ashamed of all the lovely but impractical things I found. So to avoid further temptation (and further strain on the cc) - can I join in this challenge please!

    Hello & a big welcome to all newcomers :D ;

homealone, Notjusta Mum, gratefulforhelp & thoroughlybrokemillie :hello:

It's cheered me up having new faces along; I started my detox diet today thanks to loads of encouragemnt from sarahb & have had nothing but water, water with lemon & peppermint tea today, oh and a headache too  .

I really have to lose the weight & get into my clothes as I found out today that my work hours have been cut so I cant see me wanting to spend money on new clothes for a while :(

Right, I;m off to add new crazies to the list & Janey 07 I so agree with you about charity shops - they're like a poor girls txmaxx :D full of all sorts of random & eclectic stuff. Hope you have a lovely holiday - isnt it great that holiday clothes are almost timeless :D

    Well done everyone :A

  • Hi everyone,

Can I join please? I've been spending way too much on clothes - get bored so quickly with things, cast them aside hardly worn and impulse buy more and more. I've decided to have a clear-out of the dross so I can enjoy the nice stuff that I do have and - crucially - not buy any more (how scary?!).

I have all the undies, PJs, accessories etc that I need so it's cold turkey for 3 months and then maybe £100 allowance for the rest of the year.

    xx
  • Hi Everyone! I wasnt going to join as i only have a v small amount of clothes and thought i would need to buy lots this year! I have been really lucky and picked up a winter coat that i really needed for £7 on Ebay and OH paid fro it as a Valentines present so i am going to go for it!! I have recently gone up a size in clothes so do need some new work trousers but will be scouring charity shops this week with my girls so may get lucky! Roll on the car boots, great fun and sooo cheap.I have read this thread from day one but i am no longer lurking!! Will let you know if i get anything "new" this week.Keep up the good work girls.........

Lula-I howled out loud when I read your comment about not being able to walk away and leave something on the rail which got you into debt in the first place....a feeling I know well!!!

Well I'm not getting m uch support people!!, my husband, mum, sister and friends thought I was joking about the challenge and have thoroughly mocked the idea as they think its totally unachievable with my spending habits...At first I was kinda upset they didn't have any faith in me-and now I'm using it to enforce my challenge-I'll do it just to prove them wrong!!! But I'll do it by stealth and won't actually make it known that I'm doing it......I find this works, when I gave up smoking I found I gave myself more leeway by not telling anyone and therefor I had nothing to prove to anyone except myself and I found it much easier to do. (I'm trying to fool myself here)

Unfortunately for me there's no vouchers coming my way as I've had my birthday and so I've only really got mothers day as an opportunity to gain something which doesn't come out of my budget.....my kids have excellent taste so I just gotta hope they get me something versatile.....they bought me a beautiful prom dress for xmas but its sparkly etc so only useful for party nights out, but wow did i smile when i opened it to see how well they knew their mummy :D you gotta love em!!!

So, I spent the whole day shopping with the kids and bought absolutely nothing for myself, I bought kids new stuff and had a look about but came home with nothing-and today it didn't bother me.

I had a sewing machine once b ut i broke it and ended up binning it, I might have a look at buying one again but find creativity isnt my strong point and neither is time management.

    speak soon
