  • I printed out the details on the page and handed it in when told that it was 6%, sent up to Branch Manager and Regional. Meanwhile as there was a cooling off period I opened the ac.
Phone call later confirmed that it was 7.75% but told me that there was no paperwork regarding the 7.75% and that I should check the interest, which thanks to the calculator on this site, is very easy to do. They commended the MSE site. Thankyou.:j

I opened one at my local branch late Nov, with the minimum of fuss or bother. First STO went out on 24/12 on schedule for the min £20. However I was told that i can change the amount to transferred by changing the STO at least 3 days before the money goes out. So if I have some spare I can put away more. The catch with this saving account is if you withdraw any money in a month the interest rate drops to 3%. Tho something that was said during the setting up etc, was that they (Barclays) were trying to keep the offer to existing customers, and only a limited number were available in each branch ??? was this a ploy to get customers to sign up ?

Luckily I dont earn enough to pay tax, so i get all the interest. Each year i take my paperwork to the local tax office, they check it and each year I dont earn enough. Tho i dont know what I will do next year after they have closed the "local" office 20 mls away - they are moving it to 60mls away.........dont make sense to me when they are trying so hard to extract the taxes from us, to close local offices so make it less likey we go seeking help ????? is it me ????

  • I went into branch adn they said its not 7.75 but 4.2 so i left.
I then called from the office after seeing other posts on here.
They told me on he phone that its not 7.75 and that anyone who has opened a account today wont get one, he was adamant it wont happen!:( i argued but still no joy.
    what else can i do?

  • Went into the Amersham Branch today. Persuaded daughter, who persuaded boyfriend, to also open accounts. Pay in by cash or cheque for first payment. 7.75% interest and a very nice chap to open our accounts. Lady on till made an appointment and said that we must come in today or we wouldn't get the higher rate. This branch is obviously clued up.

  • Staff in a N Ireland branch told us computers were "down" this morning and we couldn't open an account. We were given the phone number of a "personal banker" and advised to ring after 2.00pm. We did this and were told that the rate was 6% and had been for "quite some time"....we quoted the Barclay's HQ quote from this site to no avail....the rate is 6%, 6% , 6% ......no willingness to move from this postion. Said that the credit crunch had caused rates to come down some time back and that 7.75% was "ancient history".
This was the first and last time that we enter over the threshold of a Barclays branch!

Thanks, Martin...keep up the good work...can't win them all!
  • I just opened the account online as I already have an account with Barclays, and so they can take the initial deposit from my account immediately. At the end says they will send me details in few days, I hope the processing is immediate, do you think I should phone up to check? They may not have a clue on the phone about online applications?
    Life is one long project
  • opened mine and although its too late to transfer it in via SO paid it in cash at the counter, staff said it was 6% but thought i would get some cash in just in case

  • Left with my wife, drove to town opened 2 accounts and back in 30 mins. Lady very helpful and knew where the info had come from. We opened a best rate Isa there 2 years ago so our info was all there, that helped. Other than that no problems Thanks :j
  • Just been in to the local branch of Barclays today, me and my father intended on opening one of these accounts.

At first they said that they were very busy and we may have to wait 30 minutes.

Then the woman came back with a leaflet stating that the rate was 6% and we could open but would only get 6%.

She specifically mentioned the MSE email and said that it was incorrect.

I did not open one of the accounts, my father did and his first payment will be taken in January 2009.
  • i;ve just called again, got a lovely guy who has opened it straight away, he had a memo on his computer, so anyone stuggling call:
