Did you apply for a Barclays Monthly Saver in December?

  • Just some quick comments to confirm a few things.

    * If you get the account open and credited today you will get the 7.75% no matter what the branch has told you.
    * Your first payment needs to be by cheque as this is the only way to get a payment logged in time, subsequent monthly payments are by standing order and you need to make all 12 to get the full rate.
    * The account opening deadline to get this rate is also by the end of today.

  • I've been a Barclays customer for over 25 years. I went into their King's Cross branch. The staff insisted it was 6%. I requested that they confirm in writing that they would not give me 7.75%. They refused to do this but filled in a complaint form even though I stated that I was not complaining yet! I asked them to phone their head office. They phoned their savings division, a call which lasted all of 45 seconds. Embarrassed apologies followed, even though I told them they had no need to feel so as they could only act on the information they had. Result - 50 minutes of effort. Account opened at 7.75%, two flushed Barclays staff put in that position by a Bank that seems to offer a widely fluctuating level of professional/unprofessional service depending on the branch you deal with and who don't appear to keep their staff fully informed. As an aside, my partner went into their branch in Stratford and she had no problem whatsoever.
  • Thanks for the reply MSE Wendy.
I made the opening payment today from my current account (non Barclays) through fast payment to the monthly saver, rang then up and its all gone through, do you think that is enough to get the 7.75%? Person on the phone seemed to think interest rate was still 6%.
Wow this is all a bit of a sham from Barclay's end.
  • Bank stated that rate was 6% .Showed them Martins E mail with 7.75% .After discussion with senior staff agreed to open at @7.75%.Ensure you have some confirmation that same has been opened at the higher rate.
  • JUST BEEN TO BARCLAYS NORTHWICH, CHESHIRE... not offered 7.75 she got all paperwork out and was adamant it was 6% even though i transfered money into it immediately.. just wish staff were all up to speed on it all, she told me she had never been told it was 7.75??? so im totally confused..... and even when paperwork comes it will still say 6%. ANYWAY HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL.. FROM THE DARKEST DEPTHS OF CHESHIRE...
  • Just been into Erdington branch in Birmingham. Staff were unware of the 7.75 rate so I opened one anyway. She set up the standing order to start on 2nd Jan ( 'the earliest it can be done' )

Went back to work and transferred £250 from my current account via internet banking. This has gone straight in as I am a Barclays customer. Hope this will qualify me for the 7.75%. Fingers crossed

Existing Barclays customer. Enquired about this account via telephone banking this morning. Initially 6% was mentioned, I referred to 7.75% and was immediately told, yes if account was opened and credited by today, higher rate would apply throughtout term. Easy peasy process for me then. Was told confirmation letter might refer to 6%, but I would be getting higher rate.
Mental note to check next month!
  • I visited my Barclays branch today and was told the regular savings account interest rate was 6% and had been since Dec 1st. I spoke to the manager of the branch who (after checking with her Head Office) confirmed this. I opened an account anyway and lodged a customer complaint.
Either Barclays have got it wrong or you Mr Lewis have !

My daughter, an ardent MoneyExpert fan went into the Muswell Hill Branch in London and asked to open an account there - her mortgage is with them also!
She was told she couldn't open it today as she hadn't got an appointment. My daughter quoted the Money Expert newsletter word-for-word but the lady said 'our account is for 6%'. My daughter left, showing her disgust!

Have to have a appointment, Unbelievable !!!!
Another poster saying they can't pay cash into the account, Unbelievable!!!!

    What a shambles.

  • I am very grateful to Martin Lewis for his information about the 7.75% Barclays regular savings account! The person I made the appointment with at my local Barclays to open this account on December 23rd said a definite NO to this rate. When I said "So, it's 6% fixed then" his reply was "It's not fixed". On looking on his computer, he agreed it was. I then went across to my bank to set up a standing order (for Jan 1st onwards along with my other debits). Fortunately today's e-mail from Martin's Money Making Tips confirmed the rate plus difficulties others had had. I printed this off and took it down to Barclays. They were not happy. They did allow me to go and get cash to pay in today. However, I have nothing in writing that the rate is 7.75%.
The staff did not know the product, which is a worry.
    Anyway, Thank you Martin.
