Did you apply for a Barclays Monthly Saver in December?

I saw the Urgent listing in todays e-mail and went straight to my local branch who were very helpful BUT the info on the e-mail was wrong in that you could only get the 7.75% if you could set up an instant payment/standing order today. I was able to via my Halifax account and it was OK, otherwise I'd have got ONLY 6%!0

A cheque book was all you needed to get the 7.75% today.0 -
I was told that I can only get 6% and has been changed along time ago. She wanted to know where I got the info about 7.75% and made me feel quite stupid. I opened it yesterday & then transfered money in. I'm in hope it might get there in time & I get the 7.75% anyway, but I doubt it!:rolleyes:0

I was told that this account was previously 6% and called Regular Savings. He said the 7.75% is very new and they only found out about it today. He said this "Monthly Savings" thing is new.
I doubt people who opened this account months ago will get the 7.75% rate.0 -
Opened the account and was told that the rate was 7.75%. We went into town this morning to open the account and nobody seemed to know if a cheque was acceptable or not to open the account so we went home and asked them to phone us when they knew and at 2.30p.m. we were told that we could only open it with cash so after a quick trip to the cash advance machine we finally managed to open it. It was a hassle and nobody seemed to know and all the replies from the staff were different some saying it had to be by standing order another a cheque and finally the phone call we received said that it had to be cleared funds hence the cash. Thanks for bringing this to my attention as rates are so low at the moment this makes a nice change0

After just seeing Martin's email, I flew down to my local Barclays and opened an account with cash. Phew! :beer:0

Splodge12 - Strange that they wanted you to pay by cash.
My branch manager said cheque was fine and because I was paying it in today (from a non-Barclays account by the way) I would get the 7.75% rate.
Also Martin's original advice in today's email said "take a cheque with you".0 -
I have just returned from my local Barclays branch.
I have seen (and have copies) of a) An internal memo dated 31/12/08 confirming that the 7.75% rate is historic as of 30th November. b) A Rates for Savers leaflet dated 1st December 2008 showing a 6% rate for Monthly Savings effective 1/12/08.
In addition the first deposit was required in cash. I only got 6%. Will follow up on Friday when the branch can phone its HO.

* Your first payment needs to be by cheque as this is the only way to get a payment logged in time
OR Cash as my OH has just returned from opening this account at 7.75%. There was no confusion over the rate of 7.75%, but there was confusion over whether the account could be opened by anything other than a S/O, but that was soon cleared up with a phone call.
She confirmed her account balance at 31/12/08 on screen displayed the £250 cash deposited a few minutes earlier.
EDIT : To all who have opened this account and have a cleared payment already showing in their system - To maximise interest gain make your S/O payment for either the 2nd/5th Jan and all subsequent payments into the account on the first few days of each month for the next 11 months.
EDIT 2 : The poll should have another choice - They told me it was 7.75%, but there was other confusion, but I DID open it.0
