So, as the end of March fast approaches, are all you job applicants who have passed your AO boards and have been waiting for this recruitment freeze to lift beginning to give up all hope of EVER getting "the call" to start work?
There is still no sign of this freeze lifting, is there? At least not in the North West.
Has ANYBODY heard anything more about this, whether good news or bad news?0 -

With a General Election imminent and the possibility of a change of Government, the state of the economy, the criticism of the ever increasing public service wage bill. As for people who were 'lucky' - if that be the right word - to be offered an 12/18 month contract, one wonders if their contracts will be extended or made permanent. When these 'lucky' people took up post (middle of last year) there were not enough desks for them and there were active moves afoot to find more accommodation, this seems to have come to a halt. All in all on the basis of the above I do not think the future looks too rosy for those already taken on on a fixed term contract, let alone those still waiting. My advice to all would be keep/start looking elsewhere.0 -

There's very many folks on this thread who are chasing DWP jobs - or have been successful in getting them - either temp contracts or perm..
I am sure some see the DWP as a career move.. but I am guessing most want it as a "relatively" cushy and secure job with an overly generous (by comparison) pension scheme.. And there's nothing wrong with seeking out the best option.
Unfortunately I think you are probably very right.. post election any fixed term contracts are going to be very vulnerable.. the easy cuts will be the first ones made regardless of how that impacts on staffing and service levels in short term.
I would wager that the pensions scheme will be in the firing line too - Im sure there is little if anything that can be done to claw back the pension entitlements of long serving civil servants.. but there is almost certainly going to be a backlash against 23% schemes just as there is about bankers bonuses (bet the braying mob won't see their hefty "pensions bonus" in the same light then.. though the general public sure will question why Civil Servants get fairly competitive wages and still get the best pensions going...).. in a market where there are 6000 applicants for a a few hundred jobs the laws of supply and demand say that there is room for cuts/freezes in remuneration levels - be that salary or other entitlements...
The other factor is that "cuts now" are inevitable.. somewhere down the line every Government dept is going to have its 84lls squeezed dry.. now and for at least 4 years.. even if the country returns to good economic growth and tax revenues rise sharply, there will be no imperative to reinstate salary and benefit cuts.. people on 0% increases for the next 4 years will be earning 10% less in real terms.. and that "loss" will never be recouped.. while managing the crisis is a difficult and problematical task for any government.. bet your bottom dollar that the opportunity to be fairly savage with expenditure while pleading "it's best for the country" will be a bonus relished by parties of all colours..
Is now the time to work for the government? - as a career civil servant I guess so.. and as a lower paid worker perhaps the prospect of a job with no payrise but relatively good working conditions and practices is still a reasonable trade off.. But the private sector will recover sooner, salaries will rise, and opportunities will be there for the good folk.. and ultimately those jobs are no less stable than the civil Service is going to look in 12 months time I suspect.0 -
As one of the "lucky ones" who was offered a position last year, I can tell you that all temp and fixed term contracts will not be extended or renewed.
Hence why I am "back on the heap again"0 -
Hi Red Frankie. Thanks for your reply. Sorry to hear that you too are waiting. It is like purgatory, isn't it? And as March draws to a close, the hope that we will ever be contacted is fast slipping away. I am already feeling extremely depressed today, with the start of yet another week and not one single reply from ANY employer or agency where I have submitted my CVs. I don't think I have ever felt as low as I am feeling now. One time, I would get at least one or two calls per week offering me a temp office job here and there. But now, I don't get any at all!
As I say, it is like purgatory, and I stil cannot believe that I have passed an AO boarde and not been offered a job.
God, these miserable, miserable times!!!RED_FRANKIE wrote: »Hi Truegho
