  • Im lucky i am currently working but want to leave my job, the thing is they have contacted my employers for references and i am now being questioned as to whether or not i am leaving, its totally unfair that they have told you that you have a job but cant give you a start date. When asked its seems like how longs a piece of string.

I think the DWP is quite target driven too, I can't think of any other explanation for some of the daft things the job centre does.

All governement departments are target driven. When I worked in VAT we had to collect so much revenue per day, visit a certain amount of businesses per week and deal with queries in X amount of days.

Apparently, the people on the desks at JCP have to get through 15 "customers" per hour.

The biggest difference between Civil Service targets and the private sector is that in the Civil Service you won't get promoted if you don't meet targets but in the private sector you lose your job.

I should add that I have worked for 3 of the worlds 6 largest accountancy firms and although my reasons for wanting to work in the Civil service aren't entirely altruistic I don't have any desire to go back to the cut throat culture of greed is good.

I would agree with you on that one. My last job was in an accountancy and I felt like I was surrounded by a bunch of Ferengi (profit driven aliens from Star Trek)

Well i didnt come on yesterday cos i fancied a stress free day...but then this morning some guy from the newcastle DWP phoned me up and stressed me back out.

Basically he was phoning in reply to my email to tell me that NONE of us, merit list or not are guaranteed a job until "the business" require us, therefore he see's no reason for my complaint. He also said that at the moment business requirements HAVE BEEN MET!! and they are no longer recruiting. I asked him about the freeze and he said "all jobs at the minute are full in most areas, and we will re-evaluate this at the end of october". He said SOME people may still recieve a start date but its unlikely, and most of us will not get a job AT ALL! Apparently in May/June they needed loads of ppl so they doen a huge recruitment drive, they filled all the jobs and now they have all of us left hanging (he sarcastically said "its like 100 people applying for one job, we cant possible place you all...well d'oh dont recruit in such huge numbers or make the scoring harder so u dotn get as much ppl passing). Nice work DWP. Part of me thinks they've done this to get lots of unemployed people out there for interviews to boost up there records/targets lol.I explained to him that i was told i would recieve a start date in august and that i have now been made aware of 2 people who have been started before me, regardless of the fact that i was higher up the merit list than them. He told me if i had a grievance i had to email Louse Perry. Eh d'oh thats who i emailed and thats why he even called me in the first place, and i mentioned ALL of this to her....so why now have i to do it again? So they can get some other incompetent person to phone me. Jeez...pee'd off now! sorry had to rant a bit.

That's disgusting. We've all been promised jobs that don't exist.

I just asked someone straight "there aren't any jobs, are there?"

    The response: "I don't know".
  • well this differs from what I was told 2 days ago by the person in charge of recruitment in Newport. She told me her office was desperate for staff and as soon as HR allow it, they will be calling people with start dates.

Received a letter from Newcastle this morning saying that they requested personal references early this month and have not received them back. Funny that - one of them only received the request on Monday this week, and sent it straight back, and the other hasnt received any such request

they also state that the checking period for IRC 60535 closes on the 30th of this month and if they havent received them by then then I wont be considered for a position ! - What position would that be then, if there aren't any to offer:mad:

Hopefully thats right then, but from what the sarcastic man on the phone said to me, its nto the case. But then again, they all have different stories on different days. Inconsistency is the DWPs word of the week i think
