Am I the only person who just buys clothes that I like when I see them? Rather than deciding if the shop fits in to a certain social catagory?
The only exception to that is Primark and Tesco, but I don't shop there for different reasons.0 -
Do we have the same dad?neverdespairgirl wrote: »I don't, really, no.
But my experience is that genuinely wealthy and successful people don't choose their casual and lesiure clothes based on such preconceptions.
My Dad today looked like he'd been dragged through a muddy hedge backwards, he was wearing a jumper that features in a photograph of my 29 year old sister as a baby. And his trousers were covered in mud most of the day, because he'd been planting trees. Bet if I asked him where what he was wearing came from he'd look a mix of bewildered and bored.
I remember during the 90's, getting a panic call from his partner.
They were about to go out to an important event where he was guest speaker. He got ready and had put on an ancient pre war dinner suit that was his fathers (and was purchased second hand back then). The moths had got to it, the silk had worn away. He couldn't see the problem as it was the one he always wears.
He then decided that to stop people noticing the moth holes and fraying lapel (and gigantic peg trousers that sat up around his ribs) he would team it with a frilly (Manilow style) 70's dinner shirt that he had also worn for years.
As we dealt in vintage, we always had a stock of dinnerwear (though mainly pre-60's) and we provided a classic dinner shirt (thoigh it was 1950's) and another suit. He couldn't see what all the fuss was about.
It's now cold, so he will be wearing his 1953 tailored by Burton coat at the moment. His mother saved for 3 years to pay for it. It's pretty groovy actually.0 -
i used to find it hilarious to go to the henleys store in the trafford centre, buy a top for £35 in the sale, then 2 months later be wearing the top, go into usc or somewhere similar and see it on the rack for £60 and try and contain the laughter
especially if a staff members friend, of which there were always at least 3 hanging around the till (easy to spot, been there 10 minutes, not buying anything just talking to the staff) was wearing the same top lolthings arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back then

I have to agree that "Designer" clothes are pretty chavy. There's something desperate and needy about it. A touch of Mrs Bucket.
The footballer thing made me laugh. They're hardly know for their taste and class.
The whole conspicuous consumption trend will pass and it'll be seen as vulgar again.0 -

Chav, Chava or Charva is a slang derogatory term applied to certain young people in the United Kingdom. The stereotypical image of a chav is an aggressive white teen or young adult, of working class background, who wears branded sports and casual clothing (baseball caps are also common) who often fights and engages in petty criminality and are often assumed to be unemployed or in a low paid job.0 -

You'll find another. Hopefully with a company that provides a good service to society rather than selling the crap that USC did to teenagers that don't know any better and had to use their credit cards to buy overpriced nonsense.
You'll be fine, you'll find something much better. Good luck with it, losing a job is always terrible but most find that the grass is often greener so don't despair.0 -
How about a nicely tailored Armani suit?? Im sure DB has quite a few and he's been at the height of male fashion for years now;) Yes, a lot of the stuff like his Sarongs i can only wince at.
DB - David Beckham?
I think you are missing the point, here, though. Many wealthy and successful men couldn't care less about male "fashion", certainly not in the DB sense.
To test my hypothesis from last night, I did ask my Dad today what shop his clothes were from. He did indeed look bored, said, "dunno", and then, more helpfully, "ask your mother"....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
I agree 100% with your parents, NDG. You can tell true designer clothes buy the uniqueness, the tailoring/cut and the quality of fabric. When you have to advertise in ten foot letters accross the front of your jumper, the likelihood is that the abovementioned qualities of fine clothes are missing.
!
If I am going to advertise someone's brand, they should pay me rather than the other way round (-:...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Hi Sis (-:
My Dad wears clothes my mother buys him, except that he doesn't really like new shirts / jumpers / trousers, because he has some already.
His work clothes are pretty simple - a collection of nicely-tailored suits, shirts, and ties, and he scrubs up pretty well.
His Barber coat, which he got in the 80s some time, has been re-waxed by my mother a few times, and looks fine....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
