pudding rice

Options
Hello everyone.

Does anyone know where I can get pudding rice, also known as short grain or round grain rice? I've been asking at Tesco and they do have it listed, but they don't stock it, and I have several recipes for making my own rice pudding and I'd love to try them.

Alternatively, can we use regular long grain rice?

Thanks for any help.

Bought 2 packets from my local tesco last week. They display it with the puddings, not the rice section, in my store. ps just made a rice pudding now for sunday dessert :)
  • I've bought it from Asda before.

  • Asda definately have it although I'm not sure whereabouts on the shelves as I have a delivery.
  • I am surprised that your supermarket does not stock this as I always buy mine from Tesco...........would have thought that most grocery shops would have it so try elsewhere locally.
My mum often used long grain rice but it did not make such a nice thick pudding as I suppose it was not as starchy......still perfectly edible though:D

Pudding rice is definitely displayed next to the rest of the pudding stuff - jellies, custards, tinned fruit etc

I was going to make some on Friday with the leftover cream I've got, but we were too full. (I've got a 20 minute recipe, rather than having to cook it in the oven for hours!)

Thank you. We did check the puddings section, and the breakfast cereal section (me and the Tesco woman), at 2 of the 3 stores I use, and when they checked they just didn't stock it. I'll try the 3rd, see if they have it. There's also a 4th I can try when I get back to work.

There are 2 Asdas I can try.

Now I know Tesco do it I'll also persist there.

  • It's in a box in Asda rather than a bag, but I can't remember where I saw it when I last got some.

If you get stuck you can also use risotto rice, it goes pretty much the same way as pudding rice...! :)

Thanks, I could see risotto rice at one of the stores, but not at the other. So if all else fails, I'll give that a go instead - didn't want to get basamati or something and have it all go flat.

    Ta. :D

Sainsburys sell it ..Our local branch have it next to all the Other rice, on the bottom shelf ,blue bag ,500g ....We use it like normal rice for all our meals ..
Lots of Japanese and Chinese food served in our house and this cooks more the way Japanese seem to like their rice ..Stickier than say Indian rice you have with a curry .
Very good for Onigiri : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onigiri
