I would recommend Alonissos which is off the coast of Skiathos. Although it is a small island there is enough going on to be interesting and it is still very traditional.

we are going to paphos in Jan for two weeks, i chose paphos as last time we were in ayia napa but spent all our time driving down to the archaelogical sites which seemed to be down paphos end so thought it would be a good base. plus the temp is higher in paphos than the rest of the island. i did consider driving over to the turkish side and stopping over but got a bit put off by reading the cyprus mail as kyrenia seems to have a lot of crimes each day
, i dont really fancy it now with just my mom and kids in the car, plus it said not to stop in hotels with casinos as most are brothels:eek: , poor mom, id put her out to work :rotfl:
i know the hotel we are going to stop in is a bit ugly still as newly opened but nice rooms (capital coast resort & spa) for a cheap price so will be using as a nice base to sleep in i think as will be out for the rest of the day.
i will try not to mix with any riff raff then;)***MSE...My.Special.Escape***0 -
I love the eastern side, because a great beach & nice sea are important to me and the best beaches are on the east side & the sea is calmer.
Also Pathos & Limmasol have been resorts for quite a few years now, so they have that slightly jaded Spanish Costa resort feel about them, IYKWIM.
I wouldn't stay in Ayia Napa (but nice to pop into for a day), but I like to stay within that area. Just outside Pernera or Cape Greco area.
I keep meaning to try Northern Cyprus, I've heard its nice. You can go as a day trip from southern Turkey too, but I don't know how long the ferry takes.0 -
Zakynthos and Kefalonia are my favourites, well were I wonder if its all over developed now?0

Crete was nice- best keep to main resorts if no transport, or risk it with the (freindly) local people, buses etc!Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0 -
Have you thought of island-hopping? We have done this a few times, it's not just for students.;)
You need to get a flight, preferably to Athens an allowing around 3 weeks if you can. Then get a bus to a port, either Piraeus or Rafina, then jump on a ferry to your chosen first destination. (Rafina to Andros is a good place to start.)
You can stay for as long as you like and move on when you wish. Accommodation is never a problem in May/June/July before the students arrive. There are always people who meet the ferries offering good value and often lovely places to stay.
It is a fantastic way to see parts of Greece that are less 'touristy', especially if your chosen islands are ones without airports. You just need to allow enough time to get back in time for your return flight, and bear in mind that the ferries get busy at weekends with Athenians.
Essential reading is the 'Greek Island Hopping' guidebook and website.

no no,its a secret...no one believe her. Kefalonia is terrible, full of tower block hotels, boom boom discos,English bars and union jack towels.;)
Strangely enough I had the same thought about Kalkan on the Lycian coast of Turkey. It's really great for a childfree holiday, really beautiful , plenty to see and do and fabulous restaurants. You can have a hotel, villa or apartment. Go early or late summer to avoid intense heat and it's out of the euro zone. However as I want to keep it a secret... in truth it's just as Psst says about Kefalonia really!!!0
