Greek Islands: Any ideas

Hi
I am looking at taking my lovely wife somewhere nice and warm for the summer for a couple of weeks. Friends have suggested the Greek Islands as a starter. We want to go somewhere warm but not too hot that we can,t go out sight seeing.
We are into ancient history/culture. I have seen a couple of the islands on the internet but I do not want to go somewhere too popular and full of drunken tourists. Any thoughts?

if you can stand the horror of easyjet then they fly to mykonos and santorini so you could get cheap flights if you book early now then combine either with a villa on owners direct or book a room seperately through thompsons/hotels4u etc
both look lovely...i have 5 children so the islands of corfu/ zante etc more suitable for us but would love to stop in both the above islands.
i have been to corfu, zante, kefalonia and halkidiki so can give you info on any of them if you wish

My brother swears by Santorini. He's been to almost all the Greek Islands but goes back here a few times a year.0

Hi
Have you considered Croatia as an alternative?
It's not easy to find cheap flights to Greece, even with the low cost air lines.
However I know Ryanair fly to Istria region in the north of Croatia. Alternatively you could base your holiday around flying into Dubrovnik, although expect city prices there. www.flycheapo.com lists all the cheap airlines flying in and out of everywhere, so you could check who else flies to those destinations. Certainly in Istria there are coastal resorts like Porec and Pula, with lots of historical interest. Scenery looks beautiful and food is supposed to be excellent. Price wise I'm sure it'll be better value than anywhere in the euro zone this year.
www.balkanholidays.co.uk seem competitive for packages.
Being further north, whilst still hot in summer, the climate should not quite as oppressive for sightseeing as it will be in the Greek Islands at that time of year.
Researched all this for myself last year, then couldn't fit in the holiday, hoping to go this year!!0 -
Another vote for Santorini, especially as a couple. Although if you prefer to get out and about every day rather than chill out some days, as with most of the Greek Islands, you may not want to spend a full fortnight there. Though it can be easily done, especially if you take up a day or two on boat trips to the small volcanic islands nearby etc.Instigated terrorism the road to dictatorship.0

Greece is best in the early autumn, after the searing heat of summer & while the sea is still warm.
Crete is great for things to see.
Cyprus is also lovely, as are parts of Turkey.
I don't like Spain & the western med, but I love Greece, Turkey & Cyprus, the eastern med.0 -
As others have said, Santorini for me ! but it is a small island so a week is fine, two weeks you might get bored.0

The area of Cyprus around Paphos is a dump IMHO. Dirty, over developed,no decent beaches, rip offs, chavvy southern git timeshare sales types etc. The other end is better toward Akrotiri.
I've only been to Cyprus once and the best bit was when i felt the wheels of my plane leave the tarmac.0
