Peugeot for me. Pure and simple unadulterated pile of !!!!!. If the wind blew the wrong way it broke down. I have never in my life known a more useless invention to be honest.

Had a Vectra which was alright until i had one problem which then set off a thousand others. But generally Vauxhall has always seemed to be ok, once had a Cavalier that had done 300k and was still going strong.

Most reliable car i ever had was years back a Clio, it would have run forever.

Cant comment on present car (A4) as haven't had it long enough.

  • Been driving since 1996 and out of the 18 cars I've owned all I've had go wrong on me is...

Punto - rear suspension came loose.
Laguna - left it's water pump in outside lane of M74.
BMW 525tds dropped its ATF all over the road at Xmas time.

I once had the misfortune to own a Talbot Alpine.

Granted it was past its best but it had a pudding basin gear shift (waggle it around til you find one) and a built in herbal foot spa (leaked in water like a convertible with the roof down.
  • Fiat Stilo, or "beepo" as we lovingly call it ;)
  • Peugeot 206 for me. Unreliable, dodgy build quality, leaked like a sieve. Decided enough was enough after 9 months of ownership (bought pre-registered, but got a good deal so after 9 months, sold for a £900 loss). It could have been worse!!

Previous posters were mere beginners :D

Try beating a Reliant regal , with a crash gearbox, wooden floor and a gearstick which could come away in your hand. Colour , battle ship grey.

    Fond memories !

A lada....with a broken clutch. It would drive ok-ish if you started in second.
I also almost bought a trabbie once....but then couldn't insure it
  • The most unreliable was a Mk4 zodiac with the 2 litre V4 engine and manual column change, that car probably went only 1000 miles between each head gasket replacement, until i decided to tighten the head bolts down with a 3 ft scaffold pole...that cured the problem.
Well that problem anyway, you name it, it broke.

I also had the Mk4 zodiac executive with the 3 litre V6 Essex and auto box, talk about chalk and cheese, that car was indestructible and would tow my bangers (i was a banger racer many moons ago) at xx mph plus effortlessly.
Don't try this at home folks, but i am talking 35 odd years ago.

At least those old motors were fixable by anyone with a bit of nous.

Fiat Tipo - fine except it didn't like the wet and refused to start when it was raining or even just damp despite many mechanics best efforts. Also didn't like torrential rain as we discovered on a French motorway in a downpour when it stalled at 65 in the fast lane...happy days
    I think....
  • worst was a Diesel Ford Escort.
my most reliably unreliable was my last car. a '94 Golf VR6, if you set the clock to the right time something would go wrong. If you left it at the wrong time it was fine.

Most reliable cars i've had have been Jap import Celica's. On my second, the first went for ever till i crashed into a giant tin opener and i got it written off (repairable) and the same goes for the one i have now.. they just drive and drive.
  • bmw 528i..... and nearly every post 85 vehicle i've had except the three ladas and the fso...
