Laptops Direct has a built-in search for new laptops with XP on them (i.e. those which they sell)...

However, if you search in these forums for that firm you will find many dissatisfied posters, so buyer beware.

They're all netbooks which he's said he doesn't want...

i've used Vista for over 2 years now. The only problem i had with it was the awful Vista desktop and it asking to continue when you want to do something.

i rolled it back to classic mode and cancelled the extra 'security' and its just like using Windows 2000 and XP in Classic mode.. nothing is different at all.

How do I do that? I know I have been using it for only a week but I don't like it.
In particular, having to remember to left click before I start to type something is irritating. ..Maybe this is because it is not a mouse. Also, I will be using/reading a particular page when it jumps to something else. What is that all about? And, I have still not worked out how to highlight some text and cut/paste it althogu this question was asked elsewhere - I'll go see.
  • Right click on the desktop and go to personalize (sic) > window colour and appearance > Windows classic > ok

with the jumping about and 'not a mouse' i'm guessing you're on a laptop. The mouse pad can be annoying but thats more laptop than Vista. It does th same you me, if you catch it whilst typing it moves the curser for you.

With left clicking before you start typing, thats not a new feature either. You need to click to make sure your curser is in the right place whatever OS you're on.

highlighting text - same as with a mouse. Put the curser at the start (or end) of what you want to highlight, press and hold the left 'mouse' button on the mouse pad and drag the pad over the text you want to highlight. Then either click the right mouse pad button for the menu or CTRL & C is copy, CTRL & V is paste and CTRL & X is cut.

(i picked up a Trust wireless mouse for about a fiver from Asda.... hell of a lot easier than the mouse pad)

If you are bothered by the User Access control feature in Vista you can download a small utility from Norton which will give you selective control over it.

Ok for basic use and web surfing as it is a web book, but to use as a main do all PC it's a bit limited not just by it's small screen.

sounds simple enough if you know what it all means - personally I don't understand a word of it ! Better have a word with my techie, if I can have the spec I want with an XP lookalike I might start to broaden my idea of what to look for. Admittedly the Vistas all seem inexpensive in comparison. I'm slowly coming around to the idea that I might just have to end up with Vista.
  • its pretty much a case of click click click to do it. there's no technical registry hacks or anything.

right click on the desktop, personalise, top option on the box that comes up, click windows classic in the drop down box and click ok.
