Hi mate

oh dear, seems I've started a disagreement between some posters - not intended, I assure you.
Makes are very personal choice, there was a time when I wouldn't drive a Hyundai but have done for the past 7 years, so I'm open to considering anything within reason - except 2nd hand perhaps.
davidmt33 I was led to believe netbooks aren't as good as laptops. Other than size I haven't a clue what the difference is but having been told that I've tended not to look at them. Webcams, bluetooth (again haven't a clue what all that's about) aren't important. My top budget is £300 max so the ones you've suggested are out of my reach.
Thank you to everyone who has given me ideas of where to look. Sparrer0 -

Both Asus and Lenovo are below £300 as too is espresso's AdventA netbook is a light-weight, low-cost, energy-efficient, highly portable laptop suitable for web browsing, email and general purpose applications — primarily noted for its small form factor. As the name implies, Netbooks were intended to primarily exist in a network environment using software repositories for installation of software and thus contain no CD/DVD drives & have limited storage. Netbooks typically have less processing power than full-featured notebooks and limited ability to run resource-intensive operating systems.[1]
If you don't fancy a netbook then take a look at: PCWorld or Comet have a FUJITSU or a COMPAQ (unsure if you can stretch £9.99 more for the Compaq and I'm afraid they're both Vista)
Finally how about an IBM THINKPAD, an eMachines (Vista I'm afraid), a Compaq Evo, or an eMachines (Vista again).
I appreciate you've said you'd prefer XP but given your tight budget I felt it appropriate to mention most of the ones which come within your budget.0 -

thank you for this, it explains quite clearly and now I fully understand why I was told to avoid a netbook. It seems to have very little going for it, ie no CD/DVD drives, limited storage, suitable for browsing and email...sounds like it would be ideal as a childs first computer.
re Vista/XP, it's not just a case of preferring XP, it's a case of I will only consider it. I will stick to my spec/budget and keep looking.0 -

Sounds good, pity I don't know anyone with a business a/c at PCW or I'd have nabbed them before now!0 -
quick question Sparrer..
how come its only XP you'll consider? If you run Vista as Vista its a pain in the knackers but if you roll it all back to classic mode it runs just like XP (in classic mode). Vista comes with too many bells and whistles but deep down its still pretty much XP, or Windows 20000 -
Look for a second hand laptop on ebay or Amazon etc.
Search for a decent make reasonably close to your home and ask to view before bidding and to collect if you win.0 -

For just those reasons scheming_gypsy. I've heard nothing but bad about Vista from everyone who has used it, from home users to professionals. I don't want hassle, I just want a laptop I can get on and use. The change from pc, which I've only ever used, is going to be strange enough - or perhaps I'm being too blinkered, holding out for what I know, ie XP?0 -
i've used Vista for over 2 years now. The only problem i had with it was the awful Vista desktop and it asking to continue when you want to do something.
i rolled it back to classic mode and cancelled the extra 'security' and its just like using Windows 2000 and XP in Classic mode.. nothing is different at all.0 -

Good advice, as too is:If OP dosn't mind second hand Bigpockets have often got laptops for under £200, need to check the stock regularly though.
How about:
Refurbished DELL C600
Refurbished DELL C610
Refurbished Compaq Evo N1020v
Refurbished IBM Lenovo Thinkpad R51
Refurbished Compaq nx6110
Refurbished Compaq nc40100
