Sparrer I wish you lived by me, I'd love to have another female to go swimming with, I'm about the same as yopu 5ft nothing and overweight. i don't know how heavy I am but I am flabby all round.
I just don't like to go on my own, I'm not a good swimmer, but like to have swim/walk paddle kind of thing etc.

honestly, find a ladies only session at your local pool, and you will find most women will be doing the same as you, ie swim for a few mins, then stand in the shallow end for 5mins to get your breath back, and then swim off again for a few mins.

after a few months, you might pluck up the courage to move from the slow lane to the medium lane, as once you get fitter, you will find the ladies who have come with a friend, and swim two abreast, chatting, are holding you up

Ive yet to pluck up the courage to move into the 'fast lane', as they wear noseclips, and although i think everyone is looking at me blubbering around in my swimsuit, i dont want to draw more attention to myself, with a strange nasal accoutrement:rotfl:

aha - dont know if this is helpful, but my mums dog is like that - she was risking pulling her over when it spotted a cat, or interesting diversion - we got her one of these and it has been a boon -
    http://www.chemistdirect.co.uk/mikki-walkrite-harness_1_20210.html

when the dog pulls it literally puts the brakes on her, and stops her! Its great for training her to walk to heel, and it cant be uncomfy as she is excited to get it on as it means she is off out!

I did have one, it was a laugh really, the border collie kept clawing at his face and rubbing his head along the floor till he managed to get it off. It never slowed him down either, he pulled just as hard but choked himself along the way, the silly moo. This is the one that goes round the snout, and over the neck one?

  • this study showed us that having a low vitamin D status is 20% worse for your lung function that smoking is. So while that is NOT a good reason to start smoking it should make people realize how bad for health is the fact that most people are Vitamin D deficient.

Because Vitamin D is fat soluble it gets locked up in your fat cells and isn't able to circulate or do any good. So people who are overweight are always vitamin D deficient therefore they need even more than does everyone else.
    1000iu/daily for every 25lbs weight.
So someone who is 11stone will need 6000iu/daily at least.

If you read the thread Does Exercise Really Keep Us Healthy? you will see that there is little evidence that exercise on it's own affects weight loss.
The most effective strategy is to Adopt a low carbohydrate diet The one I use Dr Dahlqvists plan meant I didn't have to count carbs or calories or do extra exercise or even buy any special foods.
I just stopped eating those foods that made me hungry and fat.
I lost over 2lbs a week without any problems or additional exercise. I did find as I lost weight that is was much easier to get about and I no longer felt breathless.

The priority is therefore to lose weight by not eating bread, potatoes, rice or pasta or sugar or Oils with a high omega-6 content like corn oil, sunflower oil, soya oil, peanut oil or margarines.

Its great being able to enjoy all the full cream cheese and yoghurts , double cream and full fat creamy cheeses you want and still be able to lose weight.

And if anyone dares to suggest that all that cholesterol will be bad for you then show them this study that shows those with the lowest cholesterol are the most likely to die and those with the highest cholesterol live longest.

I could give up fats and sugars but not the bread/potatoes. I'd be ill if I did that, I've tried it, I endup biting everyone's head off.

Ah guess what - I just remembered I have 1/2 a pint of double cream in the fridge!:D

I smoke, I smoke like there's no tomorrow. About 15 a day! Very skinny roll ups.

    No potatoes?

    No BREAD?????????

I might as well go get measured up now

Oh, just noticed no sugar, that's okay then as I don't have a sweet tooth and a bag of sugar lasts year before I throw it out. Phew! :rotfl:

Oh dear Barneysmom, I smoked roll ups for some years after (early ;) ) retirement and tailor mades for many years before that. I'm not a self-righteous ex smoker believe me, I still get the craving at times, but I wouldn't wish this on anybody. I can't/won't give advice as I'm in no position to preach but just wonder if you've ever thought about stopping. I didn't stop as I thought putting on weight was my big fear but what I feel now with this stupid illness is genuine fear. It's worth just giving it up a thought, honest. Tell me to mind my own business but I really, really wouldn't want anyone to go through this :o .

Thank you everybody , I didn't expect any replies (other than criticisms as it was all self-inflicted through smoking for 40+ years) so I was really happy to see so many thoughtful ones :o. Btw I gave up smoking in March 07, that's when all the probs started

Unfortunately I don't swim so I think bobbing up and down all over the place (it would have been the shallow end only of course!) might just cause a few tuts in the pool  , however I have 2 good feet so a-shuffling I will go. I hear what you say about the weather VfM4meplse and noonesperfect, I learned the hard way that it doesn't suit. When I started the asthma attack I was desparate for air so I sat outside in the cold . Paramedics were understanding but explained why it wasn't a good idea so now I know not to do that again. I'll wrap up warm and wear my scarf over my mouth and nose bandit-style . My neighbours think I'm a nutty old woman anyway so it won't disappoint them :rotfl:

Thanks again, and a happy, peaceful and healthy as possible New Year to everyone

    Sparrer

If you've got severe asthma and copd I'm surprised your doctor didn't send you a load of bumph last month. The NHS and met office have teamed up to give peeps with your condition early weather warnings so you can plan your life accordingly. I would ask your GP's nurse about it anyway, you may have slipped thru the net by mistake. She will have leaflets about the condition or you could get in touch with the British Lung Foundation or look at their website.

    PS

It's never too late to stop smoking. You can't reverse the damage but it can only help not doing it now. Well done for stopping.

Sparrer - well done for quitting!! That's a massive achievement after all those years puffing away.

You will definitely be successful with your weight loss too, if you show the same determination as you did with cutting cigs out of your life.;)

I haven't read all your thread but it's never too late to start swimming classes. What about water aerobics? I have a friend who does that & she loves it. Walking is also great exercise, even if you just start with a very short walk to the end of your road and home again. Just aim for a few more steps each day. :j
