Cheapest car to run

I'm with Tomstickland on this one. I used to have a Peugeot 106 diesel (M Reg) and it cost buttons to run. Cheap parts, cheap servicing, basic mechanics so not much to go wrong with it and best of all almost zero percent depreciation.
How does the vegetable oil thing work? A litre of vegetable oil in Asda is £1.15, a litre of diesel is now 98p. I'm now cooking my chips in diesel and slowly getting used to the taste."A nation of plenty so concerned with gain" - Isley Brothers - Harvest for the World0 -

yes veg oil is not woth the hastle at the moment unless you have a good cheap supply
about 2 years ago it was 30p a litre cheaper and it was just a laugh to run it on the stuff0 -
All the talk of day by day costs are ok but the depreciation cost should also be taken into account,If you buy the wrong new /nearly new car it could cost a lot more in depreciation that otheres in the same class.
If we are talking banger type cars it would be a different matter.0 -
How about and Audi A2 1.4 diesel? I think they're probably cheap tax very high mpg and slow depreciation, aren't they also made from aluminum? Or you could get a citroen if you prefer...but I know what I would choose0

Simple....buy a pre-1972 classic, no road tax, no depreciation, low agreed insurance, sell it after 3 years for the same money; remember approximately 1/2 of ALL the energy consumed by a car during its life, is consumed when its first built......so by keeping these cars alive.......you become one of the few truly GREEN drivers!0

I do like something like the Pug 106 D.
Does anyone know how old they have to be to be able to run on veg oil? Would the ones made in 2001 be ok?
I have a cheap place to get old veg oil but I have to filter it. I know it works ok in an old Tranist van but the rust underneath means I wont get it through mot this Jan. Its a shame because the engine in serperb been running on veg for yrs now.0 -
