  • Just to note - all my mp3s are in nice orderly folders, by artist->album.

You can keep your folders how they are by de-selecting the following option:
Edit menu > Preferences > Advanced > "Copy files to I Tunes folder when adding to library"

Make sure that is off and your music will stay safe and sound where you put it.

I think that is part of my issue....why do I want the software to do what it wants with any of my music, and what's so onerous about keeping on top of organising your stuff ?? no offence, but I do a better job of organising my stuff than itunes does ?!?!?!

hmm.... what's so onerous about keeping my stuff organised..

ok.. back in the late 90's when Real Jukebox was really the only alternative, and i ripped all my cds in them days onto the computers hdd, i organised them myself in

    My Music -> Artist Name -> Album Name -> 01 ....

    etc etc etc

now.. when iTunes came around, it did all that for me, in the format that I wanted, so, it means i don't have to do..

and how much more organised can you be, than a folder for artist, and a folder for each album.. you can still browse to that point if you need to, but i never find a need to having to go into that folder..

oh, and as for the difference between drag and drop, well.. that means you only want a specific item on your mp3 player, and you need to

    1 - browse to folder
    2 - album i want
    3 - plug in mp3
    4 - drag and drop

rather than the itunes way of doing things

    1 - create playlist
    2 - plug in ipod
3 - select playlist to sync
    4 - click sync

so theroetically, when you look at the grand scheme of things, the drag and drop method, is the same length of clicks etc etc

I think part of the problem might be that people want their music organised in a way that suits applications and devices other than the iPod.

You can organise your iTunes library however you want to, so I don't really see that as being much of a problem.

I love my 80GB iPod Classic. I shove a CD in the computer and iTunes launches and asks me if I want to import the tracks, automatically naming them from the Gracenote database and grabbing the album cover from somewhere (I don't know and I don't care). I can then drag and drop the tracks into a folder of my choosing on my backup drive. The files are in AAC (lossless) format and sound as good as the original CD.

I record a TV programme or movie via my EyeTV box then export it direct to iTunes. Next time I connect my iPod, the TV programme appears in the iPod menu.

I also import audiobooks into iTunes and they appear on the iPod. And my list of contacts with phone numbers and email addresses also gets imported onto my iPod.

    Seems pretty easy to me!

I find an Ipod and Itunes great for TV shows and podcasts...convert them, import them, synch them....great for train journey's to work etc..
For music it's a pain in the butt. The iPod's not the best machine out there for music and Itunes seems to make it more difficult with large collections, although the latest software has made it a little easier for batch editing. All the useful addon scripts I could find were for Macs only...so there's definitely a user need for more configuration..just not on Windows.
The other half has an iRiver and that's so much better for music i don't even use the iPod for songs anymore.

how large is a large collection..... ?

i have a reasonably large collection compared to most which i've seen, and I find things perfectly fine,. I don't need to batch edit anything obviously, as they are all tagged correctly, i just find that comment a bit odd
  • I've got 7000 tracks on my ipod, mostly nicely tagged. Since i listen to it on Random play a lot of the time it doesn't really matter if they are tagged or not though

Just over 170Gb, but a lot are from a few years ago when i spent months converting old LP's...and iTunes didn't have much functionality then.
They live on a synology box with iTunes server to stream around the house...but it's not the best option for me so the iTunes server doesn't get used.
The software is there today to batch edit them properly...but getting them into iTunes would be a pain...and as the iRiver sounds much better than iPod i use that for personal music and drag and drop.
I was recommended Foobar anfd Twonky mediaserver as a better solution...but it's just the hassle of sorting through again. It'll never get done now...

That may well be the case. As I said, I've never needed to use iTunes so never have. I don't own an iPod, don't have any MP3 files and my music is organised in a way that suits me, my music server and my DAP.

  • I don't know what the problem is. I use iPods and iTunes (have done since iTunes first came out) and it's easy peasy. You are obviously doing something wrong.
