I've just spent around 3 hrs on and off trying to load up ds1 &2's ipod shuffles with stuff I've already got ripped onto my HDD.....flamin' nightmare  Why, oh why can you not just do a normal copy&paste/drag'n'drop with mp3's onto flippin' ipods
...or am I missing something basic ????

Yeah! What you are trying to do does not make money for Apple therefore it is made difficult or impossible (just like getting a battery changed).
I went for a trusty Creative Labs Zen player ages back - it just acts as a USB drive when I plug it in. It was a pig to get the software/firmware updated to work with Vista but it's all go now.
I have 3 batteries and charge them all when going travelling - that's about 8 hrs music per battery. Swapping the batteries over is as easy as pie...“When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around.
But when I got to be twenty one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years.”

It's exceptionally easy to stick mp3s onto itunes that you've ripped yourself.
Drag into itunes -> edit some of the album details (eg add some album art) -> sync ipod
You might want to disable itunes from moving files into it's own directory structure0 -
You aren't alone, which is why none of the five mp3 players I've bought this Xmas are iPods!
The cheapest couple cost me £2.99 each and are very easy drag-and-drop, c/w FM radio and lyrics display. The most expensive two were around £80 each and were a Sony 16Gb and a Creative Zen X-Fi 8Gb (plus 16Gb SD card). Both fab mp3 and video players, wish I hadn't had to give them away! :rotfl: The only reason I can see that people buy iPods is because of the wide range of accessories available. They certainly aren't the best mp3 players out there and iTunes is a nightmare. 2021 Targets

If you want a large capacity of space, the ipod is still the best value to go. My iPod Classic has so much stuff on it (80gb), i'd be upset replacing it with 'just' 16gb of storage
If you can't use itunes properly, it's not the softwares fault because there's plenty of people that can do0 -

Ringo, the sort of stuff I listen to would never have album art available via the 'net !! ...and I think this is part of the problem as far as itunes is concerned...it seems to be okay if you like carpy middle-of-the-road stuff, but go outside that and you can't get it........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

it's not a case of not being able to use it, but compared to a "normal" mp3 player it's a total and utter nause

You can drag any image file in and use it as your album art - i never let itunes pick it for me (and i'm not registered for their shop either). But thanks for pre-judging my music collection. I tend to search for it in Amazon then drag the album art in from the Amazon website.
I use to own a Creative Zen mp3 player - it had a drag and drop interface, but personally, i prefer iTunes. If you are so against it, why not use an alternative?
e.g. http://www.yamipod.com/main/modules/home/
or http://www.getsharepod.com/
I've only used sharepod in the past, but found it pretty good. You can put a copy of it on your iPod, then add music to it on any PC you plug it into0 -
hanx ringo...had a quick look at sharepod, and it looks much more user-friendly than ikkytunes
might have to investigate further later on.... ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Ipod-hater here.

My first 2 MP3 players were ipods and I use to use Xplay software with them as I hated itunes. Simple drag and drop and no mucking around.0 -
