  • I have always used other MP3 players, not Ipods as you can put on Media Player files and they take up about 55% of the space of an MP3 file. So with the amount of disc space that an Ipod uses for 10 hours of music, you can have 15.5 hours worth of music on an MP3.

    Plus they are much cheaper.

Another thing, my friend had £2.8k worth of MP3 files on her laptop. It got stolen. Insurers will not pay out for this. But if you had the same value in CDs were stolen, they are more likely to pay out.

  • Using an ipod does not stop you buying CDs. Your friend actually spent £2.8k on downloads?

Using an ipod does not stop you using MP3s from any other source. I buy mine on play.com (or more usually, rip them from CDs)

    Sigh.. iPod myths are everywhere

I think that is part of my issue....why do I want the software to do what it wants with any of my music, and what's so onerous about keeping on top of organising your stuff ?? no offence, but I do a better job of organising my stuff than itunes does ?!?!?!

If you don't want it to, you can tell it not to.

I would be surprised if you did a better job of organising it though. iTunes makes a folder for the artist, and then creates subfolders for all that artist's albums. If you change an album name in the tag of the audio file (i.e. edit it in iTunes), it'll change it to the appropriate folder automatically. If you change the name of the artist, it'll change the name of the folder that artist's files are in.

I think part of the problem might be that people with a Windows frame of mind are using an application with a Mac way of doing things.

I think part of the problem might be that people want their music organised in a way that suits applications and devices other than the iPod.

  • Erm... so, you put the files where ever the hell you want them on your hard disk, then you drag them into iTunes... how is that not letting you organise them in the way you want them?

Then, in the iPod, you choose how you listen to it (by artist, by album, genre...)

I think a lot of this is not getting to know how to use the software and making presumptions

I think, ringo, that for me the issue is that to achieve the same effect through itunes, it takes a lot more nause to get there, and as marty suggested earlier, it's not particularly intuitive from a windows user point of view compared to a mac user's.
e.g. on a normal mp3 player, all I have to do is 1. copy folder from pc and paste onto mp3 player, 2. press play on mp3 player. It seems to me to be far more nauseous than that via itunes......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • Don't get me wrong - i don't like the concept of synchronizing my mp3 collection onto the iPod. It means essentially, i'm going to have two copies of my music collection (actually i have 3, cos i back it up onto an external drive) and dificulties in using the player on more than one machine.

Once you can find out that you can make batch changes to the ID3 tags (just select a bunch of songs, right click and then select 'get info' i think you'll find its a pretty decent bit of software.

I'm not pro-mac by any means, i'm primarily a PC user, but i've found that using iTunes means i've got a far more organised and accessible music collection than just organising it by folders. When i'm out and about, i can browse my music by artist, album, song, genre, composer and those designated as compilations. If i structured my music in rigid folders, then how would I do that?

    1. Drag folder into iTunes
    2. Sync mp3s onto iPod
    3. Press play

One more step for a lot more versitility.

My daughter has had an ipod touch since she was 11yo. She got 4 CD's yesterday and she put them onto her ipod straight away. I'm registered with iTunes and she uses it herself (she always asks me first if she wants to download a song from it though).

I've had a look and it would take me absolutely ages to figure out how to use it though. :o
  • You know, I'm in the same place. I hate not having my music in folders... I know it might not be as "efficient"... but, that's the way I like it. I sometimes think I'll revert back to my MP3 CD Player that gives me some crazy battery life (ie. 80 hours), and just burn all the songs I want onto a CD... :(
