Where would society be without socialism?

IMO, socialism in it's true form has never and will never exist - ownership by the people, people pay in according to their means and take out according to their needs, government is there to administer.
Communism - ownership by the state - with profits going to the state - to do with as they like.
Capitalism - the survival of the fittest - with talents and skills being recognised - though you could argue it is all funded either by under paying people or over charging people - how else do you make a profit?
Most of Western Europe seem to be social democracies - with capitalism and a form of socialism (the various welfare states). Most of them are as good if not better than our own.
I would rather we lived under the type of social democracy that we have, with it's associated costs but also it's benefits to society.
A bit simplistic maybe.0
