Arrived at Sainsburys at 17:10 and waited around the fresh turkeys - there were probably about 100
They were already reduced by about a third - (eg £39 down to £26) and then about 17:30 they did a second reduction - halving the reduced prices (£39 > £26 now £13)

For some reason they mis-reduce-priced 3 birds and I got 2 of them !

    9.42kg and 9.345kg - both to serve 15
    Originally £42.30 & £41.95 - got them for £8 a pop :j

There was probably still 60 or 70 of them left when the store closed at 18:00

Also a dozen large free-range organic eggs down to £1 from £2.99

Turned out to be a good day overall - having redeemed the last 4 of the 8 "wombled" £20 Morrisons vouchers.
Getting £320 worth of shopping for just £160 means we are having a HALF-PRICE XMAS :j

  • Not many bargains at all this year. Our local Waitrose didn't seem to have anything reduced e.g. Christmas items with use by 24th still with no reductions by 14:30.

Not much better when I left there and went to Tesco but I did find a dressed Lobster for £7 :D

got the train into town and arrived
around lunch time at Lime street station
Liverpool. The M&S store in the station
    had nearly everything reduced,even the
tins of biscuits and the bread.big reductions too
example the extremely chocolate swiss rolls were
50p each.I only went in for a sandwich got lots of
stuff and ended up costing just over a fiver.
the big M&S in town did not have anything reduced
in the food hall when I called in there later.

Nice one. I went to the Tesco on Allerton Road and it was crap. However, people, M&S said on their email to me about the sale online today, that their stores are open today so maybe you can get something cheap...if you can get there, that is, given there's no buses!!
  • I always plan my Xmas store hits like a military operation. Last year I did 7 supermarkets, but I only managed 5 this year.

Tesco was a waste of money - as it was an Extra store they had signs saying the turkeys would only be 50% off as they were opening boxing day.

I then went to Saino's where I got a £22 ham with apricot for £1, various breads and salad pots for pence and a £8 luxury pudding for 80p, with a chocolate trifle worth £2.99 for 30p. A few other bits but as this is a regular haunt, I'd already stocked up for Xmas Eve on previous occasions and froze the items. In reality it was no better then my normal bargain shopping but with more competition.

Then to Waitrose - not worth it at all, but this particular store is a waste of time normally anyway.

Then Saino's no2 which I picked up a few more pots of cous cous, followed by Saino's no3 which had turkeys and ducks - lots of them at 1/2 price. Had I been inclined I could have waited longer and picked them up at much less, but the freezer was already full!

All in all as an experienced pikee of Xmas Eve, not a bad haul, but too many people with the same idea..!

I went to Tesco at 3pm (it shut at 6pm) and the staff were just getting started on the reductions. The two staff members doing it at the regular chill section were getting mobbed so the manager pulled all the stock off the shelves and barricaded off a quiet section of the store. The cages of things to be reduced were brought in one end, the two lads in the centre were working like demons to get the reduced stickers on and four other members of staff (including the manager with his shirt sleeves rolled up) were grabbing the cages of ticketed items as they were finished and zooming them round to the relevant area of the store ie bakery, chilled, veg etc. It all worked very well and nobody was trodden on in the scrum.

Having said that the reductions were not huge, usually down to 35% or 30% of full ticket price. I bought two Chinese Banquet bags at £2.80 each, a pile of quiches forthe Boxing Day buffet at 70p each, Danish pastries at 30p for a five pack and odds and sods of veg at good reductions. Really would have liked a turkey or roast but ho-hum, can't win them all. I had an M&S chicken in the freezer for back-up.

Ours was same, 25p for bunch bananas, 50p sprouts , did see a cooked turkey down from £50 to £25!!! everyone was walking past it.Usually Asda is good for knock down stuff xmas eve , but not this year.

I totally agree, our local Asda was the same. However, we did manage to get Charlie & Lola brollies for 1 pound each and a disney princess torch 50 pence! There were massive queus (sp) by the bakery/fresh fruit/veg aisles.....people just attacked the trolleys and anyone that came in the way! There was no regard for children/elderly, just sheer greed for mere pennies worth of items!

I'm all for getting a bargain but not at the cost of hurting others or being hurt in the process! Anyway, next time I will try the bigger stores hopefully more stuff and less hassle!

I decided I'd brave the Christmas eve rush to see if I could get any bargains but both Sainsbury's and Tescos were rubbish. The only thing I got reduced was the parsnips (50 p reduced to 20p WOW!) I even had to pay full price for cut herbs and this was after 4pm on Christmas eve. Very disappointing. Is it an urban myth that there's vicious discounting when the shops close for two days?

wow , who was the buyer at your store 100 turkeys left ! well done.
There were none left at the 3 stores I went to and that was at midday.
I think a lot of stores mis judged on how many turkeys to buy, as by the sounds of it most people had slim pickings.
    Hope everyone enjoys xmas lunch.
