Out of interest, I am smelling a rat.

More and more are 'failing' but then being bought almost immediately (Whittards, OC). So no discernable difference is being seen on the High Street. Are many of these actully just takeovers on the cheap - allowing loss making branches to be got rid of and creditors wiped out, while keeping the underlying good stuff (i.e keep the assets get rid of the liabilities).

It's the same rat which scuttled its greedy way through the last recession -- and yes, it will be seen as well as smelt. Sadly, polite Society / unenlightened public / thick media will no more recognise it for what it is than happened last time around.

I well remember August, 1990, when our family-owned company was hit by the collapse of not one but two major ad agencies (nobody buys in a recession / nobody needs to advertise / nobody needs ad agencies.)

We were caught in a situation where we had to settle a huge production bill with a major print company. We felt obliged to do so. The day after we settled -- on behalf of clients who hadn't paid / were no longer in business to pay us -- the company went 'bust'.

A week later it was back in business.

The name was exactly the same except it now said (Successors) Ltd after the name. The owners and directors were the same. The premises were the same. The plant was the same.

We were furious at the Phoenixing that occurred here -- but nothing like as distraught as a paper merchant we knew well, which went bankrupt with the loss of a dozen jobs because the printing company was able to tell its own creditors go whistle.

Yup, the recession's back. And so is the Rat.

NDG, how much did that cost new, though? 20 years ago standard sized CRT TVs cost about £400+ if I recall correctly. Tech was a lot more expensive those days. I remember we spent £200 on a tiny 14" TV.

My mother reckons either £200 or £250, but she isn't that sure, 18 years on!

We rented our first colour TV. A small Sony. That was 1970's.

Only electrical gear we recall from late 1980's was a basic microwave - that was £100. Only just been thrown out!

    Define "major", then.

Whittards has about 130 shops, and Officers' Club 160 or so, that seems to qualify for "major" in my book.

i would say major would be Tesco, Sainsbury, John Lewis etc...

without getting caught up in the discussion of the definition of a "major retailer" 130 and 160 is a lot of shops but would have to say that they weren't major retailers, that's only in my opinion

They are expensive I agree, even with 50% off their shower gels are still £4 each! I only buy their stuff from the factory shop in Clarks Village. I mean why buy something for £4 there if you can get it for £1 at Asda or Boots?

Their hemp range for very dry skin is fantastic, though. And a little goes a very long way indeed.

I think Rymans will be next. Most businesses use Kingfield Heath catalogues for stationery and they have never had much foot traffic. You wouldnt go there for cleaning/catering/pc products either.

  • Not a high street retailer, but I think Pickfords could go. They were saved from administration earlier this year, but I would'nt want to have my worldly possessions in their store just now.
